While millions of people work daily, only a fraction of them really want the job they have. So how do you get, the Job you want? If I had to sum it up in one word, that word would be 'Confidence'. Although being confident won't get you every job you want, it's the best way to start your job hunt.
Next, You have to know exactly what you want! The average person changes jobs or careers at least 7 times in their life. That doesn't mean that the job they had wasn't what they wanted, it could just mean that it was what they wanted for that part of their life. When you decide what it is you really want, the real job begins. Be ready to do some heavy job research and planning. This is a full time job all by itself. Look for employment where you feel comfortable working, some place that represents what you would like to represent. Somewhere you can be yourself. When you find that atmosphere, you're one step closer to getting the job you want.
Maintain a daily log of your job hunting activities, expenses, call back dates, due dates etc.. This may seem a bit much but it helps you to stay organized and that's a key to being successful. Also while looking for this ideal job you have to identify the skills you have and be aware of the ones you need to get. Be prepared to get additional schooling or training for the employment you want. If you don't have the proper skills for a certain occupation, you shouldn't expect to get that job until you get the skills that you need. Review jobs from the past and find something similar or be ready to seek more education for a new career.
When you find the position you want, do some company background and position research. When your research is complete get letters of recommendation then prepare your resume or fill out a job application, whatever is needed. Learn how to create an effective resume so you can stand out from the crowd. You can borrow styles from other peoples resume, use resume building programs or go to the library or web. Whatever you do paint a picture with you in the middle; focus the employer's attention on your unique skills, qualifications, strengths, and experiences. Also let them know how you can enhance the company.
When it's time for the interview, be early, and be ready to speak about what you wrote in the resume with no hesitation. Everyday get prepared and practice on mastering your interviewing skills. This is the most important part in getting the job you want. I know it's often said, "It's not what you know, it's who you know." and that is true to a certain extent, but if you don't have or are not willing to get the knowledge, skills and have the confidence you need, you will not last long in any position. Be prepared for the statement, "Tell me about yourself." and questions such as: "Do you have any questions for me?" "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" These questions are asked to keep you on your toes. Answer them with confidence. Take time if you need to before answering a difficult question, this shows that your actions are thought out, which is good for leadership and successful project planning. Ask for clarification if you don't understand the question, don't just blurt things out.
Remember to smile and give eye contact to the person you are speaking to, this is very important; look attentive without gazing, and be confident. Be your own perfect salesperson with you as the excellent product. If you can convince one person of your unique abilities, that person may influence other's thoughts about you. And possibly give a better recommendation if they are not the decision maker.
Looking for a job is perhaps the most grueling and yet satisfying experience you will ever have. For everything you go through it's worth it when you get the second or third interview, or better yet the Job. Just follow through to the 'T', listen to instructions and this should carry you to your Goal line. Once you make it there you have a whole new journey to begin. Stay Positive, Stay Confident and Be prepared to get the job you really want!
