Getting to Know the Unsung Heroes of Harry Potter!

A Closer Look at the Supporting Characters in the Harry Potter Books

Regina Sunderland
Every Hero must have their sidekick, any major Story has the little mentioned or little known Characters. After all what would a movie be without the hundreds of Extras? In Books, we have the little noticed or mentioned Characters that give us clues, pad us softly into the right directions or throw a red herring or cliffhanger at us. Harry Potter and his group of close Friends are no exceptions. We all know Harry, Hermione and Ron. What would the Story be without Professors Snape, Dumbledore and McGonagall? How about the grounds keeper Hagrid with his love for monsters and unusual beasts? Of course we can not forget the major antagonists of our Story. He-Who-Can-Not-Be-Named aka Lord Voldemort, Draco and his Father Lucius Malfoy.

What would Draco be without his two stupid sidekicks?
Fat, lazy and stupid those are the words that best describe Crabbe and Goyle. J.K. Rowling brilliantly captures the behavior of those that hang around the Bullies in the school yard. Crabbe and Goyle have their 5 minutes of glory by being the constant "groupies" of Draco. With their less then intelligent behavior they make Draco appear even more malicious and brilliant then he is. Have they been bought or are they just the type of kid that is popular by hanging with the popular Student? Their behavior and antics make Draco's character shine brighter.

Neville Longbottom, the forgetful classmate that is the kind of friend you can only hope for.

How can you not like Neville? From the very beginning his klutzy, forgetful and never giving up attitude makes him endearing. He is the kid we all knew in school. The one you couldn't help but like. In the end, Neville is the kind of Friend that you can count on, even if it costs him.

Moaning Myrtle - the always depressed ghost that has a crush on the boys.

How often has Myrtle given us a clue, whined us in the right direction or has made us laugh with her constantly miserable behavior. She is the type of person that is only happy when she is purely miserable. That doesn't change the fact however that she still has very human emotions and desires. Do you know someone like that?

"The Pink Lady" - a portal with a sense of flair.

Maybe you won't consider her as a Character, but to me she is. The pink lady is the Portal with flair. Do you remember her drama in "The Prisoner of Azkaban?" Or when she was practicing her singing to shatter the glass? She is absolutely fabulous.

Mr. Ollivander - a small character with a big job.
We don't see much of Mr. Ollivander, the Wand Maker. Don't you wish you would have his memory? I do! He remembers every Wand ever made and sold. He knows all about Wands, an Expert in his Field without having the big head. However, he has his few moments in the sun and when he does, he shines.

Hokey - the house elf that took the fall

Do you remember poor Hokey - Hepzibah's House Elf? Charmed by Voldemort she mistook sugar for the poison she served in her Mistresses Drink. Hokey took the fall and Tom Riddle made of with the Treasure.

Mr. Filtch and his Cat Mrs. Norris.
The creepy janitor with his feline Companion. He is constantly grumpy. Being a Squib didn't do anything for his disposition. Yet, what would the Books be without this slimy Snitch. How many of you though Mrs. Norris got what she had coming to her in "The Chamber of Secrets"?

Those are just a few of the unsung Heroes of the most talked about Book Series - Harry Potter. I challenge you to pick up your Editions of the Books and read with them in mind. How many more can you find? Leave me a comment and let me know who your favorite supporting Character is and why.
