Getting Married Too Soon and Too Fast
When Couples Marry Out of Lust And/or Impuse and Not Giving Much Thought to How Real Marriage Is
Marriage today is treated like handshake in terms of how people view and treat commitment and relationships. Yet few couples even know if the person they meet tomorrow is as they say "the one", but that does not explain the record numbers of divorces at 3.5 million which is continuing to grow at an alarming rate with so many couples going into marriage for the wrong reasons. Example when Britney Spears up and married a childhood friend after just deciding to do it without much thought or provocation to her decision this had really explained why people are screwing up marriages because of the lack of judgment on their part.
It's when celebrities pull stunts like this in a way it's making a mockery of marriage because then people are apt to think that if Britney can do it so can I and many learn the hard way when the relationship and the marriage falls apart and that's due in part to the lack of maturity and seeing how Kloe and Lamar just up and decided to get married after a month of dating doesn't constitute wise thinking and how Odom proposed to Kardashian just after he proposed to Taraji P. Henson earlier that spring or summer. As many saw Kardashian and Odom dating they really saw this as a train wreck waiting to happen.
The fact that they married a month after meeting does not look like they put much thought into what they were doing and just because Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon did it after a month of dating and just shortly after he proposed to Victoria Secrets model Selita Ebanks to whom he dated for 4 months. This does not mean that marrying in a short span of time will work for everyone. Rushing to get married actually increases the chance of divorce because couples don't give themselves enough time to date and get to know each other well. This is where many miss the whole concept of why people date and this is the time you start learning about that person in more detail because there's things that can come up that you should know before you consider making a life long commitment to that person. For all you know that person could have some things in their background that may harbor your decision on whether you want to continue being involved with that person.
There are cases of women who dated men and learned that they had criminal records, married with wives and had families, lying about their educational and professional backgrounds. Those who spend enough time dating will have a better chance at staying married than those who rush into getting married. The generation who dated for a short time and got married were living in a time where people took marriage seriously. It's very sad to see the current generation buying into the excessive coverage of celebrity weddings because that's where the "in love with being in love" theory comes in. People are so in love with the idea of love that they forget that marriage is a life long commitment and that you are building a life and relationship with someone.
The fact that Kloe is seen gushing over this may in fact be her undoing at some point because being married to an NBA player is not easy and many of the current wives of professional athletes can attest to that. She's not used to having someone who's gone 6 months out of the year on the road playing ball and that can become very lonely after a while and she's not had a chance to adjust herself to the life that many of the girlfriends and wives of pro athletes deal with. It's also a sign that she's in lust more than love since she's still in the honeymoon phase and once that wears off the reality of marriage sets in which is the big lesson many people begin to learn when they settle down.
The fact that marriage is one thing that society has little regards for is why so many relationships are short-lived in terms of actually working because people are so enthralled in the feeling of being in love they forget that marriage is for life. Just because you meet someone and they are so wonderful you never know what's in their background unless you take the time to get to know them and actually meet those around them to know who you're actually dealing with. Love is wonderful, but it can also be blind to those who use poor judgment.

Post a CommentNicole....first off you're wasting your breath telling me that my response was deemed poor for journalism. Second it's my article and if someone wants to get smart they get a smart response back. I did a lot of researching on this topic before writing the article and if you normally don't respond to articles then why did you waste your time sending me a response?
Nafeesah - first off, I never comment on articles. Just want to say that your comment to Russell demonstrates poor journalism -- actually it spits in the face of true journalism & makes me wonder how so many people even get the opportunity to write articles. Maybe this isn't an actual news source and I'm expecting work that's not amateur...if so MY BAD!! But if so, how can you make an unsubstantiated statement, pass it off as fact, and then not provide proof? Ridiclous. It's YOUR job to provide the research and stand by the basis of fact written in your piece. This article was poorly written, btw.
Russell...I am a sociology major and having researched my topic pretty extensively has yielded that couples that rush into marriage are at a higher risk for divorce because they didnt take the time to date and to get to know each other before making a rash decision to get married. If you want statistics you can do your own homework.
I would really like to know if you have stats that support your comment, "Rushing to get married actually increases the chance of divorce because couples don't give themselves enough time to date and get to know each other well." I have a friend that is proposing next week to a girl he's been dating for less than two months and I definitely agree with your statement but would like to have data to back it up.
