There are many different ways that new models break into the modeling business. A small handful of girls get discovered by scouts and have modeling opportunities handed to them; but the larger majority of models have to work their tails off trying to find open doors, and still very few ever make it big. This is not meant to discourage you but rather to give you an idea of what you will be up against as you venture out into the modeling world.
You will find endless information resources on the web about modeling and what it takes to become a professional model. Every article won't be the same and some might give contradictory advice about what is the first thing you need to do. Some insiders for example suggest that you don't necessarily need professional photos right from the start, but others maintain that the first thing an aspiring model needs is a professional portfolio and some comp cards.
Experts advise that your portfolio should not contain too many photos. The photos should be of good quality. If you cannot afford to get professional photos taken at least make sure that your photos are not of poor quality. Your prospects are more interested in how you photograph so if you go in with a portfolio filled with bad pictures thinking that they'll see your face and be impressed enough with your face to overlook your bad photos you are almost always asking to be rejected.
Once you have your portfolio and comp cards you can begin to scout out agencies where you might like to obtain representation. You should do your research on each modeling agency that you intend to approach in order to ensure that you are not going to be taken for a ride. You should try to obtain an appointment; and if obtained, take your portfolio and comp card with you. Getting in with a reputable agency could prove to be the best thing for you. Some models have been fortunate enough to get in to the business by the simple fact of knowing someone who is in the business, whether it is another model or an agent.
The main purpose of a modeling agency is to find the model work. They help you along the way and become your representative. They are the agent on the field, pressing any kind of lead that they come across. They look for and negotiate your contract for hire. Modeling agencies work as a small independent business and there are never two businesses that are the same.
You may be wondering how to find a modeling agency. Finding the right modeling agency can be as easy as point and click. The internet has a lot of helpful advice where to get started and how to get it all done. You can access this right at your finger tips at home. Sometimes the local library can assist you. Or you can check the local newspaper, scan your yellow pages and try to find the one closest to your home. However, be advised in looking for agencies in the newspaper and yellow pages, that these mediums are known to contain plenty of modeling agency and modeling job ads placed by fraudulent agencies and individuals.
When you start looking for a modeling agency, be aware that there are phony ads and people looking to net innocent potential models. There are web sites that can advise you on how to spot legitimate modeling agencies from crooks. Don't be ignorant about the modeling industry. Read modeling books and magazines. Don't make any quick or rash decisions, and always be sure you shop around to find the right agency. Because one agency might not want to represent you doesn't mean another won't. Take the time to do the research. You will be glad in the long run that you saved yourself a lot of wasted time and money.
Finally, don't expect to get paid top dollar for modeling jobs you land. Models don't really make a whole lot of money unless of course they are top supermodels with major contracts. Be prepared to work for smaller wages than you dream of earning. Until you have established yourself and unless you make it big, you should not expect to get rich as a model; but don't regard the smaller wages as a drawback. Think of all the pictures you will collect for your portfolio, and the invaluable experience that can give you an edge over your competition.

Most agencies actually advise you to bring in snapshots. If you can't get in that way, then you can consider building a portfolio, getting a comp card together, etc, but you'll still probably have to change everything around once you finally get accepted as the agency will want you to have a specific look.
A lot of models make a living, but not as top fashion models. They do commercial work, which is where the big bucks are. It's only in high fashion/editorial that you have to be "at the top of the heap".
