Getting More Sleep While Being a New Mom

Jasmine Starr

Yes, I know the word "sleep" is a funny word when you are a new mom, but if it is avoided, you will be one cranky mom and run down in the dirt. Even when you do sleep, you may not get much sleep due to different things. In this guide, I will show you how to get more sleep when you do sleep. Please take these things into consideration because they will help. I was once a new mom, so I know from experience.

Making the Room Dark!

Sleep is a must! Now we all know as a new mom that is one thing you do not get. And that is the main reason why you have no energy. So, making time for sleep is a must! Since you won't get much of this being a new mom, let me at least offer you some tips on how to make the best out of the sleep that you do get. Studies have shown that sleep is best when there is little to no light in the room. So, you should make sure that your room is completely dark and free from light.

I'm sure your room probably has windows in it, so you will need to eliminate the light coming in through them. At night may not be so bad unless you have a yard light near your window. But when you nap in the day time, the windows will become a problem. Some of the ways you can eliminate the light is by placing aluminum foil or black trash bags to your windows. To keep your windows from looking trashy on the outside, place the foil or the bags on top of the blinds and between the curtains. This will keep them from being seen on the outside as well as the inside. You can hang these by running tape along the edges and sticking it to the wall.

Darkening your room will also keep it cooler in the summertime because the sun will not be beaming through. While making your room dark with the foil or trash bags, you also need to make sure the TV isn't playing and other lights in the house do not come in the room. To help with this, cut the TV off when you go to sleep. Cut off all the lights and maybe burn a night light or two throughout your home. That will help cut down on that light.

Play Nature Sounds

The sound of rain and waves will make the body relax and will help you to sleep better. So, get yourself one of the nature sounds CD with rain and ocean waves on it. Play that while you are going to sleep and you will sleep a lot better. However, if there is a lot of light coming from your CD player, you may want to hang a dark blanket or pillow case over the player to block the light.

Naps!

Chances are, you will not sleep all night with a newborn in the home, so you really need to take naps to help with your sleep. A couple times a day, lay down and catch a nap while your baby is napping. This will help you a lot with your sleep. Don't feel guilty because you are napping because this is something every new mom needs and anyone who has the nerve to run their mouth about you napping apparently has never had a baby/

Take Turns

Another thing is to take turns with your partner. Once or twice a week, ask your partner to get up with the baby all night. This will give you a chance to get a full night's sleep and will definitely help you. If your husband works a full time job with long hours, ask him to do it on the weekend. Maybe he will stay up Friday and Saturday night with the baby so you can rest.

I hope these tips help you. Being a new mom once, I sure know how it feels to be sleep deprived!
