Seating: no one enjoys a deck if there is no seating. Consider adding a few chairs that complement the exterior of your home. If you are handy with a hammer and saw, build in a bench that attaches to the railing. You can create seating that will go al the way around the perimeter of the deck adding a great deal of seating.
Tables: Add a table that will seat at least four. If you will be entertaining, larger crowds consider a larger table or two or three smaller tables.
Sun: If your deck is a real sun catcher, consider building a gazebo on your deck or purchase one of the ready-made models and attach it to the floor of your deck so that it will be nice and sturdy. Consider the wind in your area and make sure that you have anchored it sufficiently.
Ambiance: Add a nice portable fire pit. There are a great many different sizes and models available that will fit into any décor. You will find choices that range from closed in chimineas such as the ones available at The Blue Rooster, or one of the open style fire pits that are available at Lowe's Home Improvement
Grills: no deck is complete without an outdoor cooking area. Purchase a nice grill and place in an area out of the path of traffic. You will also want to place your grill away from a wall to avoid damage to the exterior of the building and away from windows so that the smoke will not be drawn inside your home.
Lighting: You will want to provide lighting for late evenings. Consider solar lighting. This will not require electricity and will be much more expensive than permanent lighting.
Dress it up: This is the fun part. Now that you have the furniture pieces for your deck, all placed so that visitors can sit comfortably, add the dressing. You can liven up your deck by placing colored cushions on the seating and scattering colorful pillows along the built in benches. Remember that these pillows and cushions will be outdoors and purchase those made with weather resistant fabric. Use flowerpots filed with colorful flowers or greenery that will complement your color choices. Paint your deck railing a color that complements your home. Place pots of flowers on the stairs of the deck.
