Getting the Most from Your Vacation

The Nuance of Cultural Immersion

Christopher Cutter
Once while traveling in Munich, Germany, I found myself speaking the native tongue at a local pub during the World Cup, and was mistaken for a native by an American tourist. This seemingly happenstance situation has stuck with me and is what makes my travel experiences far more than your average five day stay. Blending in has become my favorite part of any vacation and is more rewarding than following the trodden path. Straying away from the guide book and falling into the habits of locals will take you to exotic places in an already exotic land.

Opening one's self to the local favorites is better than any tourist packed trap. Using the customs and habits of the locals like the late happy hour in Turin, Italy will introduce you to the local fare, places, and people, which from a firsthand account will open more possibilities than a guide book can offer. Try using the language and say yes to everything. Those around you will appreciate you trying to learn about them rather than changing to accommodate your every need.

Take advantage of the natural wonders, the social hangouts, and the classical culture. The Alps are more than just a pretty backdrop, the skiing and snowboarding are one of a kind, and every year at Snowbombing in Austria cultures meld and you can catch the hottest DJs playing huge parties during and after hitting the slopes. While I pride myself on finding the hip and unknown, the classics play a huge part of every major city and shouldn't go unnoticed, however avoiding during the crowded times has made it that much more enjoyable. When I am not at the club, sleeping the night before off, or enjoying the sights and sounds, my favorite thing about vacation or home life for that matter is the food. Enjoying the local fare is often the most fun I have on a trip. Local food and beer has even decided where I have gone on vacations many times in the past.

In order to replicate the life of the local, you have to appreciate the nuances of cultural immersion. You have to be as ready, as I have in the past, to forget an itinerary, meet the people, and go for it. Leave your preconceptions at the baggage claim and really enjoy your vacation.
