Getting Out of Columbus, Ohio - Five Great Day Trips

Jeff Musall
Columbus, Ohio is situated in the middle of the state and is surrounded by other areas of interest worth checking out on a day trip. I spent a few months on assignment at the airport in Columbus and was able to get out and do some exploring. If you are going to be visiting Columbus or might be a resident looking for new ideas, here are five good day trips.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland

On the map it's half a state away, but it's only 142 miles from Columbus to Cleveland. You can make the trip for many reasons, but if you are there, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is almost mandatory. Aptly, it's located at 1100 Rock and Roll Blvd.

Even if you're inexplicably not a fan of Rock and Roll, the history on display is almost as fascinating as the music. Among other specials, a current offer includes H of F admission as well as tickets to Geauga's Lake Wildwater Kingdom (a waterpark) for $41.99 pp.

Seneca Caverns

Why not do a little tourist-level spelunking and spend some time underground? The Seneca Caverns visitors center is located just about 80 miles north of Columbus, near Bellevue. You will go 110 feet underground through seven levels. The route is lighted and guided.

Kings Island and Cedar Point amusement parks

Ohio happens to be home to two of the great amusement parks of America, your only decision has to be whether you will go north or south. Cedar Point is just a couple of hours north in Sandusky, and bills itself as "The Roller Coaster Capital of the World," a title hard to dispute. If you can survive Mean Streak and the Magnum XL-100, there are still many more coasters to explore.

Kings Island is just northeast of Cincinnati. Besides a bounty of thrill rides, they are currently featuring an amazing animatronic dinosaur display called "Dinosaurs Alive!"

Air Force Museum

Located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base just outside of Dayton, the National Museum of the US Air Force is a must-see for aviation buffs. A interesting upcoming event will be the reunion of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders April 17-20 of 2012.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Plan this one in conjunction with a visit to Cuyahoga National Park, located west of Cleveland. A great promotion (and deal) is the Cuyahoga Valley Bike Aboard, where you can ride the train one way and bike the other. The cost is only $3.00 for a one-way ticket when you have a bike with you.

I love to take days trips in my city. If I were ever traveling there I would like to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No need for boredom, now is there?)
