Getting Out of Debt with Frugal Living

Being in debt can have a serious impact on a person's life. When a person is in debt they are more stressed over where the money is going to come from to pay the debt that they start to suffer in all aspects of his/her life. Financial problems can cause stress that can have an impact on a person's physical health, can put a strain on relationships, and can cause poor work performance and so many other undesirable consequences. It is possible though to take back your life by learning how to utilize frugal living to your benefit. The follow will show you ways that you can cut back costs so that you can put that extra money towards getting out of debt.

Identify between needs and wants:

This will probably be one of the hardest areas of frugal living for most people. The reason is though is that most people think that they need something that in reality is a want. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and start writing out where your money is going. Once you have it written down start marking need or want next to each one. Work toward eliminating the wants from your list and you will see a difference in the amount of money you have to put towards your debts.

Compare prices:

Take the time to shop around and compare prices before you make a purchase. Sometimes with a little research you can find just what you need at a more affordable price. Take our refrigerator for example as we really needed one but did not have the money to buy one out right. We went to a rent to own store and purchased one on payments that totaled $147 a month for two years. The good thing with this was that they had a $10 takes it away for two weeks deal. So we went a head and got this much need fridge for the two weeks at $10. Then we went shopping around for a more affordable fridge. What we found was another rental store where we could get the exact same fridge for only a total of $98 a month for two years. That is a huge saving over a two year time frame not to mention we save a big chunk each month.

Resale shops:

Realize that not everything you own has to be brand new. Take the time to walk around the resale shops for clothing, furniture, home décor and other such items. Every dress I own for church has come from a resale shop and is still stylish and looks brand new. I also bought board games for us to play with the kids used at resale shops. I just make sure that before I make the purchase that everything is there and in working order.

Set a modest temperature:

Find a modest temperature on your heating and air conditioning unit and stick to it. If you get hot put something cooler on to wear. If you get a little chilled in the winter put a little extra on to wear. We have found that 74 degrees works for us year round. There are times that while cooking or cleaning I get hot and I am tempted to turn the air down so that the air conditioner will kick on but I know that this will raise our electric bill so I refrain.

Grow a garden:

Food is a need that you must include in your budget. At no point should anyone go hungry to try and save money. This can cause worse physical health issues that stressing over being in debt would. However, one way you can utilize frugal living into your food budget is to grow a garden. Growing your own vegetables or herbs is cheaper than buying them fresh at the store. Anything you can grow on your own will cut down your grocery bill. Even if it is just a little bit of savings it is still more you can put towards getting out of debt.

Coupons:

Never under estimate the power that coupons have in frugal living. Coupons allow us to save on products we already have to buy and thus saving us a little bit here and there. Remember though that just because you have a coupon for something does not mean you should buy it. Use coupons for things you are already going to buy and not as an excuse to buy something.
