Getting Personal Debt Help Through Grants

Kristi Patrice Carter
Are you overwhelmed by personal debt and see no end in sight? If you have tried and been turned down for help in the past, you may want to consider a personal grant to free you from crushing debt. There are a host of private organizations and financiers that provide millions of dollars to people just like you. Grants are designed to help individuals who have a legitimate need for the money due to a disaster, emergency or financial straits. These grants are awarded based upon an application process.

The first step to finding financial freedom through a grant would be to locate a grant. You can start your search at the online directory for CFDA, or the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. Be wary of any company that offers that provide a grant directory to you for a small or nominal charge. The information they provide can all be obtained free of charge if you know where to look. Don't waste your precious financial resources paying for this same information.

This helpful website is www.gsa.gov/cfda. It provides directories on local, state, and federal government grants. Each grant will list the specific criteria upon which the grant is awarded so you can determine if you qualify. It does not list the contact information for each individual grant, but it will tell you how to apply for the particular grant. Another website that contains information about local and federal grants is www.govbenefits.gov. Again, criteria requirements and application procedures are listed. You may find a host of various grants including grants to help with medical expenses, education costs, and home repairs.

Every grant will have its own set of requirements for qualification purposes. Criteria such as age, sex, religion, race, even what industry you work in can all be determining factors. The organization funding the grant is usually trying to help a specific group of people. Most grants are also need based and you will have to demonstrate your need. All of these factors together will help determine whether you will be given the grant or denied.

While there is no limit to the number of grants you can apply for, some applications may ask you if you have ever received another grant in the past. They will usually ask for specific financial information including your income, your expenses and your current debts. You should always answer the questions as truthfully as possible to increase your chances of receiving the grant. Fill out the application to their specific instructions to ensure your application won't be rejected due to a simple mistake.
