Getting Resolutions Right: How to Set a Goal and Achieve It

You've been planning to quit smoking or lose some pounds for quite some time now, but you just can't seem to start your resolution. Something always comes up like you're too busy to hit the gym or you're too stressed to let go of your cigarette packs.

Every resolution needs physical, mental, and emotional strength. You have to be sincerely ready to make some improvements in your life.

The first step in achieving your resolution is to plan it out. Don't simply say, "I'm going to lose weight". Translate this abstraction into a concrete plan by writing down a schedule of your gym work out and researching on the work-out places near your office.

Whatever your resolution is, keep is simple. It is much better to have an uncomplicated yet well thought-of resolution, rather than an elaborate scheme which you will have difficulty following. Be realistic in making your resolution and know what is achievable at this point in your life. For example, if you want to travel with your family this year but you know you have budget constraints, don't map out a European outing or a Caribbean cruise. Instead, prepare for a week-long vacation at a nice, local beach resort or a road trip with the family. Plan out how much you'll have save each month, just before the summer season comes in.

Achieving your resolution will be easier if the people around you are aware of the improvements you want to make. Communicate to others the things that you want to achieve, especially if they can take part and help you achieve that goal. For example, if you want to take up a second degree, inform your parents and your company. They might be willing to help you out in furthering your studies.

It is also necessary that you keep yourself motivated. It's no use starting to make changes when you are unable to sustain them. Be focused and always keep in mind the end that you want to reach. If you have difficulty staying motivated, have someone motivate you. Be sure that this person is someone you respect and will listen to. For example, if you decide to become more physically fit, have a trainer who will help you stay focused. If you want to learn to play a new instrument, have a teacher who will coach you how to play.

Most importantly, you must enjoy working towards your goal. You must have fun as you strive to achieve your objective. Resolutions shouldn't be punishments. If you want to lose weight but hate the gym, play badminton or go swimming instead. If you want to lessen your night-outs drinking and smoking, find a hobby that will take up your Friday nights.

In sum, you have to keep your resolutions simple, achievable, and fun. With these in mind, you'll surely get your resolutions right.
