Jack Woods
As many dog owners know, getting rid of fleas is not as easy as it might seem. Flea might seem small and harmless, but flea bites make your scratch itself excessively, and cause an allergic reaction in some cases. Normally, the dog fleas do not affect human beings, but in some rare cases, it happens. This should motivate you even more to get rid of fleas as quickly, as possible Fleas are extremely resistant to harsh weather conditions, so this makes getting rid of fleas even more difficult.

If you have the slightest suspicion of your dog having fleas, you should contact the vet immediately. This is important because, the vet has special flea combs for your dog. The are designed so that they could easily remove fleas and flea excrement, if this is the case. Early diagnosis is important, because it makes getting rid of fleas much easier. Vets even recommend prevention over cure, as getting rid of fleas can turn out be a real nuisance.

There are great solutions for getting rid of fleas without the use of any commercial products. Instead of buying a commercial product, some people use petroleum jelly on the comb so that fleas would stick to it, when combing the dog. Another good method is using rubbing alcohol on the comb. This will daze the fleas, so they can easily caught by hand.

If you are planning on using a commercial product for getting rid of fleas, you should get something that does not have any pyrentrins in it from the local pet store. This substance is obsolete, and should not be used in dog products meant for getting rid of fleas, because of its high toxicity. The use of products that contain this substance for getting rid of fleas can prove dangerous for your dog and other animals. The best way to go about buying the product, would be to consult the veterinarian first. .

Nowadays, when pyrentrins are not used much anymore, there are much safer products designed for getting rid of fleas. These products are usually applied applied on the back of the neck.. The products boast killing 95%-99% percent of fleas and their eggs in as little as 24 hours. It is generally advised to use these kind of products for dogs that are at least 8 weeks old, no less.

These products are very effective when it comes to getting rid of fleas.

I, myself, would advise using the product Sentinel by Novartis. Sentinel is not a topically applied medicine, but a pill that comes with benefit of preventing heartworms. Another great product by Novartis is Program. Program is particularly easy to give to your dog, because it is specially flavored, so your dog will enjoy taking it. It is designed to kill adult fleas, their eggs, and their larvae. Program is an especially good choice, as it also inhibits the life cycle of the fleas, so that they would not recur. Program can be safely given to dogs and puppies that are at least four weeks old.

Keep in mind that it a lot easier to actually prevent fleas than taking on the whole process of getting rid of fleas. Never administer any drug to you dog without properly consulting the pharmacist or veterinarian, or consulting the manual. Consult your vet on the subject of flea prevention, and properly getting rid of fleas.
