Getting in Shape for Summer

Stormy Brooke Swain
When one is haunted by the neighborhood swimming pools and thoughts of beaches, it's usually because they are worried about getting in shape for summer. We all tend to put on a little weight during the winter months, and getting it all off to get back into last years bikini, isn't always easy. If you are wondering how you are going to squeeze into last years attire, these tips should help you stay on the right track while you are getting in shape for summer.

Water

Everyone says drink at least so many glasses of water a day, in my opinion that puts too much stress on the situation at hand, especially if your like me and don't really drink water at all. The key to getting in shape for summer is to increase how much water you drink, especially when you are being active, or going for a walk. To help while getting in shape for summer, take water with you when you leave the house, or purchase water instead of soda or tea at convenience stores

Cut It Out

If you drink or smoke and don't want to or can't quit, then slow down on the bad things you put in your body, this includes processed and fast foods. Take fruit with you for a healthy snack, so those fries aren't calling your name every time you drive by a fast food place. Getting in shape for summer also has a lot to do with a healthy lifestyle, so get the patch or gums if you smoke and keep trying to quit. Use a straw or carrots to substitute the physical need for a cigarette and start drinking lemon water after a drink or two at a club.

Pilates

I love Pilates, and think it is the best way I've found to get in shape for the summer. The reason that Pilates is so popular, is because it doesn't take long to see the results. I have a tape that targets belly, buns, arms and thighs, and I can alternate which ones I want to do daily. I noticed results in a week and had about 15 lbs that I wanted to loose. Pilates are a big confidence booster, because you feel your body tighten up quickly, while you are getting in shape for summer bathing suites. Eat Light

Instead of filling your plate, be sure to eat a step up from a child sized portion of food. Eat salad, lean meats and cooling summer foods like melons. Eating light is the best way to feel lighter when you are getting in shape for the summer.

Boost Your Metabolism

Eat small meals through out the day, like a bowl of pasta salad with low-fat Italian dressing, or a plate of fruit and cheese. Eat as many times as you want, but keep all foods healthy and prepare them all at home. Stay away from processed or heavy foods, while getting in shape for the summer.

Stop Eating at Night

I think a good rule is 3 hours before bedtime. When I am getting in shape for the summer, I eat as much as I want and try to keep myself busy enough so I don't think about chocolate or salty bedtime snacks. If you eat at night all of those calories have no way to burn off and more of them settle in your body, which can hinder you getting in shape for summer.

Take a Walk

If you don't like working out, or can't seem to stay on a schedule, vow to take a walk once a day. The great thing about walking is it almost always makes you feel healthy and it allows you to be a physical presence in your community, while you are getting in shape for summer.

Use the Gym

If you have a membership or live in a building that provides a workout room, use it if outside activities aren't comfortable, because of the weather. Get a work-out buddy that is getting in shape for summer too. I've had a gym at my housing every time I've moved in the last two years and am glad, because jogging isn't fun in the heat.

Be Confident

While you are getting in shape for summer, be sure to compliment yourself every step of the way. Don't obsess over what you look like, but obsess over how you feel. If you feel good, you will be more likely to keep improving your lifestyle while you are getting in shape for summer.

Healthy Parties

I love a summer barbecue, and I make sure to always provide healthy alternatives to vegetarians, and those who are getting in shape for summer. I offer sauces on the side of lean meats and substitute chips and dip for low-fat dressings and veggies or fruits.
