When you first start any work out you might want to seek advice from a trainer, they can set you on the right track and also show you how to use the equipment. This is especially helpful, so you don't hurt your self and it also gains to give you confidence in using the equipment. I found that having a work out chart helped me to stay on task and make sure that I complete each task before I left, or should I say give up. You also want to make sure that your work out includes at least 20 mins of cardio and some weights. Don't worry you wont have to completer the 20 mins in your first trip. Naturally I started out at 10 mins and worked my way up each time. Do remember to stretch, as you don't want to pull a muscle and not be able to return for some time, I longer away from the gym the harder it gets.
Now you are comfortable with the gym and fell a little more in shape, how about trying a class?
You will find many classes at any gym that you choose to attend. Such as Yoga, Palates, Strength Training, Spinning and boot camps. I take a strength class two times a week and I find it beneficial, as the teacher will work muscles I never knew I had, while keeping it fun. You might expect to use balls, steps, bars, and weights when taking a class. But don't worry you are free to work at your own pace till your ready to advance. Taking a class is a good idea since it combines cardio and strength in one class, and if you anything like me it will keep you from giving up when you get tired. No one wants to be embarrassed walking out on a class, so you find the added strength to hold on.
Once you get good I recommend you try a spin class. A spin class is just that riding a bike, well a stationary bike. In the class I attend they dim the lights, play loud inspirational music and get you in the zone. You do a lot of riding standing up, sprinting, and also working your core muscles. I wont lie this is not a class for the faint of heart, but you feel so good when you finish. You feel like you can accomplish anything.
So this year make that 2008 resolution stick, exercise not only makes you feel good, look good but it's so good for you. Happy New Year.
