It's true; all you have to do is look up into the sky on a clear night, and observe the stars. After all, that's what astronomy is - observation of the stars and planets. Many of us have done this as a kid, and many of us still do it today. It's just so fascinating to stare up into the sky on a starry night and try to imagine what is out there, that it captivates the minds of millions.
Of course, if you've caught yourself staring at the stars on more than one occasion, you are probably already interested in astronomy, but you may not know where to begin. Many high quality beginner-level telescopes can be purchased for around $50. These telescopes can usually even be found at retail stores such as Wal-Mart, Meijer, and K-Mart.
Those who are serious about astronomy, however, demand serious equipment. Professional astronomers and amateurs alike have spent hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of dollars on telescopes and other astronomy equipment.
Check out your local library or bookstore, not only for books and guides on astronomy but for any kind of astronomy related literature. Many times they will have magazines and other journals that you can purchase which may provide some valuable information that's not in the books.
Your local college may be able to offer some inexpensive classes, too. This is a great way to get started in the world of astronomy, as they will teach you the basics. Here you can also meet other studying astronomers and perhaps even form some new friendships and relationships.
The internet is a great source of information, too. Here you can shop for telescopes and equipment, compare prices and even read reviews from completely unbiased people who have actually used the equipment in the field. On the World Wide Web you can also find hundreds of web sites and message boards, all dedicated to the hobby of astronomy.
Astronomy is a very fulfilling hobby, and it entertains millions of people worldwide. Most do it just for fun, as a recreational activity, but for diehard astronomy enthusiasts, there is a career to be made out of it, too.
