A lot of people dream of going canoeing or kayaking. These are definitely excellent ways not only to break your monotony in life but also to get yourself into shape. But most of these wannabe paddlers find it difficult to pursue their hobbies as they fail to find like minded companions and don't really know where or how to hone their skills. Furthermore, it is always safer to have company in adventure sports. Here we are listing down five steps that you can follow to get started with your long cherished dream.

1. Attend Canoe and Kayak Festivals & Expos

Attending canoe and kayak festivals is the best way to build your network. You will find nice venues, professional paddlers, free lessons, new equipments and more importantly like minded people in such events. Such of paddling festivals are abundant in the U.S. and it won't really take much time for you to find out your nearest venue. You might also get great deals out there if you are yet to buy your gear.

2. Join your nearest paddling Club

If there is a large enough water body in the locality, there must also be a paddling club. Do join the one nearest to your place. That will be another place to build your contacts. Good thing about such clubs is that there will always be someone experienced who can guide you and there will always be someone just like you to make you feel comfortable.

3. Join the American Canoe Association and the American Whitewater Association

Joining such national organizations has its own benefits. As the American Canoe Association is the real authority of the sport, its membership will keep you updated about the events around the country, new developments and other useful tips. American Whitewater Association also works on river conservation and the rights of the boating community. So a bit of social activism will definitely do you a world of good. These are non profit organizations and will definitely put your membership fee to good use.

4. Experiment with the Gears of your partners

It is not easy to figure out the gear that suites you the most. So before buying your own kit, do try out the boats, paddles and other equipments from your friends. You can also swap your gear with others to have a feel of what suits you right. You can do this at any paddling event and you will find out that most people don't really mind swapping their gear for a change.

5. Take a Lesson

Like any other skill, you can't learn everything about paddling all alone or by randomly asking people. Enroll in a formal class on canoeing or kayaking to have a more systematic training. There are beginner's lessons available for rookies. But advanced courses are also available. So take the course that suits you and follow your instructions diligently. On the other hand once you start considering yourself to be an expert, you can turn an instructor yourself and help others.
