Getting Started in a Great Hobby for the Whole Family - Coin Collecting Today

Halloween and Christmas Are Great Times to Start a Coin Collection with Kids

There are many different kinds of hobbies and most of us prefer hobbies that are very specific to our tastes. This sometimes makes it more difficult to find a hobby your whole family can enjoy together. Two brothers may have entirely different interests and the kids may not always have plenty of cash for expensive hobbies to share with Mom and Dad. I first became intrigued with coins when I saw a friend going through pocket change looking for a particular coin date. The recent beginning of the special state quarter program has renewed interest in coin collecting for many people.

This is one hobby that can be shared by a whole family or other group and can be enjoyed at midnight or in the middle of the day. You can spend a great deal on certain rare coins, but you can also start by looking for a coin from each year for a set period in your change dish, or you can even choose older coins that are still plentiful enough to be inexpensive. I enjoy collecting Barber dimes which are beautiful and made of precious metal, but if you don't mind a little wear they can be purchased at very low cost at a local coin store or on on line auctions like Ebay. Even smaller towns (like Denton where I live) usually have at least one coin shop or even a secondhand or pawn store where coins are sold.

There are many ways to get your kids started on coin collecting during the holiday season. You may consider giving your children a coin collecting guide or a little cardboard quarter folder for Christmas. If you want to start the build up right away as well as save the teeth of the neighborhood children, give out pennies to the trick or treaters and wish them a happy Halloween while encouraging them to start their own collections. If your children have friends in the same neighborhood it can also help start them on a group activity that keeps them out of trouble!

You want to get children off to a good start with coin collecting and starting on track one - you may want to consider helping them focus on a collecting goal. It is a common mistake to start with too many types of coins and get overwhelmed. Collectors who want to get into the more rare coins might consider ancient coins from Rome or Greece. History or culture enthusiasts might enjoy ancient or modern coins from Israel. A collector who wants to keep costs low (though you might be surprised at the valuable coins you could stumble onto) can consider choosing one type of coin such as an American half-dollar. A person who likes texture or beauty in a coin could choose by the metal and go with old or new pure silver coins which are surprisingly inexpensive in the right places. Of course, gold and platinum coins are great fun too if you have the budget for it!

Getting a family off to a start in coins can be as simple as getting everyone together and discussing what mutual interests there are. The whole family may want to focus on one thing, such as coins from their birth decade. Or, each family member might choose an individual collection but spend time together sharing their choices. If you have teen-agers who are absorbed in the Internet, suggest that they try starting a coin-collecting blog. Blogs are incredibly popular right now and you can start one on just about anything, like a woman from my local area who started her own blog from outer space!

Once you are interested in coin collecting, learn a little bit about some of the best practices. If children are involved, you may want to teach them how to handle a coin by the edges or with gloves. Learn how to store coins so that they don't degrade over time. There are tons of books and websites on this wonderful hobby, and you'll find plenty by searching for coin collecting in the associatedcontent.com library of content.

So, do something fun for the holidays and try a hobby that's been around for a long time and make it new for you and your family!
