Getting Started with Yoga

Johan Ross
Yoga practitioners (yogis as they often call themselves) often comment on how calm, relaxed, and focused a yoga session can make them feel. Isn't it ironic then, that walking in to your first yoga class can feel like such an intimidating experience. Working a yoga routine in to your life can have immeasurable physical and mental health rewards. Just like anything in life, however, being prepared can go a long way to determining your success in yoga.

Yoga can trace it's roots back to ancient India where it was (and still is) practiced as a means to initiate spiritual growth. In fact the word yoga is a Sanskrit word that has a variety of meanings, but some common ones are joining' and uniting'. Today the word yoga often brings to mind a group of sporty people in Lululemon gear stretched into an assortment of rubbery poses. It's true that yoga is a very physical practice but many yoga studios remain true to it's spiritual roots. To have success in yoga you must be willing to open yourself up to a physical and spiritual journey.

While yoga can be practiced just about anywhere with little equipment, there are a few things you're going to need before you begin your yoga journey. A yoga mat is essential to keep you off the floor while taking the pressure off your hands and feet. Wear comfortable, loose fit clothing. There are many yoga-specific clothing brands out there, like Lululemon or Prana that cater to budding yogis. Remember to bring water along with you in a water bottle and a small towel to wipe yourself dry between poses. Many yoga studios have shower facilities to use after your class so if you're on a busy schedule, then by all means bring a change of clothes and take advantage of the showers.

You don't have to be an elite athlete to master most yoga poses but a good foundation of physical fitness doesn't hurt. If you are looking to get started with yoga because you want to get in shape, then that's an excellent idea! Yoga promotes flexibility, strength and stamina, which is a great way to get healthy and achieve peak physical condition. If you're just starting out, try easing in to a yoga routine by signing up for a beginner course and work your way up to the harder levels. There are many different types of yoga, most are based under the Hatha principles of yoga, like hot yoga or power yoga. Find a practice that suits you best and gauge your enjoyment level. Yoga should be a physical challenge but it should be fun. You won't be motivated to keep practicing if you're constantly struggling through the session and being frustrated is no way to yoga success.

The spiritual side of yoga can often be the most intimidating. Don't confuse spiritual with religious though. Practicing yoga is the art of looking inward and challenging yourself to release the negative thoughts and enforce the positive ones in your daily life. Usually the start and end of a yoga class begins with a phrase said by the instructor and repeated by the students, Namaste'. Namaste is a common saying in India and Nepal which has a variety of translations but basically means from my heart to yours'. After that there may be some chanting and after that the focus usually shifts to breathing. Breathing is extremely important in yoga and not only helps you in the physical movements but enables you to focus on releasing your inner stress. Your eyes are usually closed during many of these exercises to keep the focus inwards. Keeping an open mind and being respectful of the practice will help you to succeed with your yoga goals.

After learning the skills of yoga at a reputable studio you will be able to practice anywhere. In the mornings at home, on your lunch hours at work, or in the evenings in the park, all you'll need is your yoga mat and an open heart. Namaste.
