It is more than a hint,
It's a warning loud and clear
That there needs be a tunnel through the blockage
Before it becomes stoppage
And then there's a bit less to fear.
It's a short little tube
Like a tunnel newly reinforced,
That blood flows on through
To get where it needs to go
To keep us in good health, of course.
There's some surgery there
To install this hardware,
This can make lots of folks tremble and shake -
But when it is done
You'll be more ready for fun
And not so prone to just jump in the lake.
The science is simple
But the skills are complex -
All surgeons are not created equal.
But if the job is done well
You won't awaken in Hell
And might not even require a sequel.
It's fitting to be frightened
Though it seems unenlightened
To not fully trust your own cutter;
But it's normal I contend
To imagine the end
Whenever you'll be opened up
By the one you know best
Or by any other.
Sometimes one just must
Muster the trust
To allow for what needs to be done.
It isn't an easy thing
No matter what benefit it will bring
Surgery is just never fun.

Post a CommentHad one of these little life saving tubes installed a couple of weeks ago, and I really hope I don't require a sequel :)
Wish the stent had saved my mom :(
Great poem David, my dad had several stent placement surgeries. While they were always scary they did add many precious years to his life. Stents are a wondrous little thing, I am glad they were invented to save your life as well!
Very serious and scary stuff.
Also nominating for a peoples award of 2009 - Your work is always stellar and 'right on the mark!'
I'd like to see this as a feature of the week in Health and Wellness. Nominating it through a 'flag' comment to AC manager(s) since the editor program is ending this month.
My husband has one. Never thought of writing a poem about a stent, but why not? ;-)
A stent poem. How clever. A unique way to get across an important message.
very creative!
I've honestly never heard a poem about a stent. I'm going to have to send this to few cardiac surgeons I know:)
