Getting an Understanding of Broadband and How it Works

Ron Legarski
Unless you have been under a rock you mostly likely heard of the word Broadband. But knowing the word and understanding it can be difficult and confusing. There are many types of Broadband but the most likely and well known type is Broadband internet access that services the majority of the world and helps it connect to each other.

The term of the service is usually condensed down to the word Broadband when it is used in a discussion or marketing format. This is the type of connection that you will get from your internet service provider (ISP) and will determine the speed of the connection that you receive from them. Many companies advertise their fast Broadband service qualities, but what does that exactly mean?

There are many choices between DSL and Broadband options. The dial up and satellite internet service link is the only option in many rural areas and this can be frustrating to the user. But in most cases where a consumer has an option the DSL or cable is the first choice for them.

The speed may be confusing to a consumer who is trying to choose the option that is best for them as well. Speed refers to the quickness of uploading and downloading information to and from the internet. Typically the higher the rate the faster you will be able to use information that you gather. More and more companies are advertising that they have the fastest connection speed and it is difficult at times who to believe.

The rate can also be different between uploading and downloading. Downloading a file will give you the maximum you are allowed and typically you are able to download a larger file onto your computer through the system faster than uploading. In uploading there will typically be a maximum amount of room that will be allowed to upload. Many times for a larger file you will need to compress the file in order for it to be uploaded. Many times a site will have special accommodations if you are uploading large items such as video files.

Another thing to consider when choosing what type of ISP you want to use is that they many times overload their connections. They may claim to be faster but there are so many people using it that it is not typically that speed. Your rate of service will depend on how many people are online. So if your rate is slower this may be the reason.

This is also true when it comes to Ethernet options for a user. If you are on an Ethernet system you may experience a slower connection. For example, if you live in a dorm room that offers free WiFi service then there may be times when your internet is extremely slow. That is because there are many others in your dorm using the same service at the same time. Then there are other times when fewer people are using it and your internet speed is faster.

Many services using Broadband depend on the speed of service to function. Services such as video on demand, video conferencing and other types of services must have a fast connection and rate for them to be effective otherwise it is frustrating to the consumer. Know what your speed will be and understand how Broadband works in regards to your internet connection speed.
