Now I think back to a few years ago when I had my first experience with GHD hair straighteners; I was having my hair done with a new stylist and she asked me how I would like my hair blow-dried. I told her "as straight as you can, please". She suggested I should have the straighteners put through my hair after my hair was blow-dried, I agreed but was a little apprehensive as I had used so many different hair straighteners before in an effort to have "poker straight" hair and always succeeded in ripping and snagging my hair to bits - causing it to look frizzier! But I just let her do her thing and so she proceeded to dry my hair and then she pulled out the GHD's!
I had never seen or heard about GHD's before but I sat patiently whilst she ran them through my hair.
Well, the results blew me away!
My hair in its normal state is extremely coarse and curly - at best! Even if I try to work with the curls by using a "magic" cocktail of styling products it has a tendency to just do as it pleases and normally just looks a big mess! My hair especially looks at its worst in humid atmospheres, it just seems to grow and grow and become frizzier!
Once the hairdresser had finished with the GHD's; my hair was sleek, straight and best of all soft and shiny! My hair was actually poker straight without any bit of frizz in sight! It was truly amazing!
The remarkable results continued throughout the rest of the day, even through all the wind and drizzle it remained to stay straight. Normally any hint of humidity would have sent my hair in to a wild, frizz ball.
I went out that same night with my new look and spent the night in a hot, smoky bar; still it showed no sign of frizz. Then I woke up the next morning expecting it to uncontrollable and back to normal but I could still run by fingers through my hair without the clumpy frizz in sight!
I started to think more and more about these little "miracle-workers" and so began a search for "GHD hair straighteners". What does GHD stand for?
I found out that GHD stands for Good Hair Day and it's a "new religion for hair". The price on the GHD website for the same pair the hairdresser used were 99 pounds! But I didn't care as I was convinced that these were the future for my hair.
So I went back to the hair salon where I first had my hair done with GHD's and I bought a pair. You can buy them online on many different websites such as EBay and Amazon. They're all around the same price and you can buy 3 different sizes:
GHD mini styler - Which are very small in width as they are designed for men and women with very short hair. They cost around £89.95.
GHD Original - These are suitable for most hair types, whether the hair afro, Asian anything. They cost around £99.00.
GHD Salon Styler - These are quite large and are easier if someone else is straightening your hair as the size can impair the control. These cost around £103.95.
So I bought the Salon "GHD Original" medium size, with the thermo protector spray which cost around £8.00 which was recommend by my stylist to protect my hair from the heat.
I was so excited as I got them home, I plugged them in, turned them on and in seconds the little red LED was flashing to tell me they were hot enough for me to use. This is perfect as I am a little impatient.
So straight from the word go these straighteners were winning hands down to other straightners I have used in the past; I would have to plug in the other brands of straightners and have breakfast, a shower and do my make-up before I could even think about using the straightners!
So literally ten minutes later I had poker-straight, salon-style shine hair again, just like the hairdresser had done for me. My hair stayed like that throughout the day of wind and the drizzle and when I went for the night out to the hot bars and clubs my hair stayed perfect!
I also find that the GHD's make my haircut look more edgy; they seem to accentuate my layers.
I am sure most women are now familiar with what these GHD hair straighteners look like. They're about 8 inches in length including the handle. On the handle is an on/off switch which I think is brilliant as most straighteners have to plugged in to be turned on, and when you need to turn them off be unplugged which sounds like an effortless chore but when you are in a rush in the morning it's just something that you forget to do! Which means you could be coming home to hole in your floor or worse a fire- so a simple on/off switch is brilliant.
The electric lead is at least twice as long as the normal length of other straighteners. So no problems going around corners to find a mirror!
The original GHD's are a charcoal, grey color with the logo ghd decorated on it. The actual ceramic plates are only 1 ½ inches in width and around 3 inches in length. So they aren't really that big but these are said to be able to do the thickest, curliest of hair!
As you may look at the picture of a pair of GHD's you may think that they look pretty unimpressive for the money. However plug them in and wait the 7 seconds for them to heat-up to the 210 degrees needed to straighten your hair and you will see and feel the way they glide through your hair and leave you with perfect kink-free, shiny straight hair!
So what is the secret to the effectiveness that so many other beauty companies have tried to achieve?
Well, GHD have said they have beaten the myth that straighteners damage your hair. How?
GHD claim "fast-heating ceramic element gives you full styling control and creates a negative charge that seals in moisture, natural oils and hair color for total protection".
So apparently they help the condition of your hair... I am not convinced though. Which I why I use the thermo protection spray. Putting your hair in direct contact of a huge temperature of 210 degrees cannot have beneficial qualities to your hair in my eyes. Nevertheless, I love my GHD hair straighteners and would feel lost without them.
Beware of other brands of straighteners claiming to have the same effect as GHD, other brands are claiming to be ceramic just like GHD but are not. My research told me that GHD are the only brand to use this kind of ceramic technology.
So in conclusion I have to say that GHD's are worth every penny, they most definitely are worth the £99, the price is high but you know longer need to carry around emergency clips and hair bands in case you have "frizz attack"!
For peace of mind alone these are worth the money. The GHD's also come with a 1 year's warranty which I have to say if you ever come across problems, GHD in my experience will always repair them. I have to say I am a proud owner of a pair of GHD Professional Ceramic Hair Straighteners. I would even go as far to say as "I can't live without my GHD's".
