Ghost Hunters Vs. Paranormal State

A Side-by-side Look at Two Respectable Paranormal Investigation Shows

Michelle K. Miller
There are popular television shows about paranaromal investigation. One is Ghost Hunters, headed up by The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS.) The other is Paranormal State which is ran by the Paranormal Research Society (PRS) out of Pennsylvania.

These two groups and shows share one main commonality: They are dedicated to helping families and facilities who are being haunted, and to bring peace to them in their investigations.

However, there are a few differences between the few.

1. Mentality. Ghost Hunters and TAPS take the takes the approach of always trying to debunk things that clients claim as evidence. They don't take noises and sights at face value, and always try to recreate instances where things can appear paranormal. Jason and Grant's training as plumbers with Roto Rooter comes in handy, especially with plumbing and pipe sounds.

As for Paranormal State and PRS, they tend to more readily accept sights and sounds as evidence. However, it is my opinion that their evidence seems to be more substantial.

2. Client interviews. It seems as if Paranormal State and PRS seems to make sure they get really in-depth interviews with their clients, and usually, it's with ever person in a home or facility, and they talk to them more than once sometimes, to get the full story. Ghost Hunters and TAPS only conducts one interview at the beginning of a case, and doesn't seem all that concerned with getting the full, true story sometimes.

3. Client involvement. Only once or twice, have I seen Ghost Hunters let a client stay with them during any part of a case. However, on Paranormal State, client involvement is encouraged, to be able to summon the entities that could possibly be haunting homes or facilities. I think this is a good idea, as certain entities may only come around certain people.

4. Use of specialists. On about every episode, if not all I've seen of Paranormal State, PRS brings in a specialist, such as a psychic, medium, or demonologist, to help assess the case. Call me crazy, but these specialists are GOOD, especially Chip Coffey. I've seen Ghost Hunters bring on specialists ever so often, and usually, all they've been good for is extra sets of eyes and ears.

5. Support of clients. In instances where homes or facilities are haunted, clients can be very emotional, and I think it's very important as to how investigators handle that. I feel as if PRS investigators, especially Ryan Buell himself, are more emotionally supportive of clients when they have reactions. I think they are especially supportive and sensitive when it comes to hauntings from deceased family members.

6. Research. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems that TAPS used to do more research on homes, facilities, and areas than they do now. PRS puts a major emphasis on research on the history of places, which has been really helpful in their cases. In fact, it's helped solved many a case.

7. Fame vs. goodwill. It's sad to say, but as much as I love Ghost Hunters and TAPS, it seems to me that they are less about helping clients and more about their fame and fortune. They have stopped going to as many homes as they used to, and seem to be more concerned about booking big gigs. I don't think big businesses or abandoned lighthouses need as much help as much families who are being personally haunted. Paranormal State and PRS, which is on television as well, genuinely seems to be interested in helping those who really want answers because they are being targeted.

These are all differences that I think bring about great significance. I will still continue to watch and support Ghost Hunters, but at this point, I think I am leaning more toward Paranormal State in terms of evidence and likability. I hope to continue to see both societies grown and succeed, on and off camera.

Sonnet, I completely agree with you. And um... they own a hotel? I didn't know that. O_o

To me... Ghost Hunters is all hype. It seems like whatever passion they started with is gone. Afterall, they own a hotel - Grant has used his fame for a platform for his music, they tour... Etc. Nothing wrong with any of that, but I've noticed that they've stopped getting evidence. Basically.

Here's my theory. Both PRS and TAPS run on one of the theories that some entities are intelligent and reactive/communicative. Who would you want coming to help? A group that wants to catch some neat evidence and leave, or a group that actually acknowledges that you're a being and tries to help.

I think that the intelligent entities know that PRS is there to help, therefore they end up capturing more and getting more results.

To me, TAPS is like paranormal tourists. They come in for the souvenirs then leave and forget about the place. I think that the spirits know that. Why bother wasting their energy for something that will come to no fruition.

Hi Michelle. I completely agree with you about the differences of the two Paranormal groups. I do like Paranormal States attitude a little better. I do believe that just because you can debunk something that doesn't mean it hasn't happend. Also, I don't like the fact that after TAPS stirs up an entity they just leave it with the family.

Hey Brenda Vincent do you think that Paranormal State is better than Ghost Adventures?caz sometimes i think or feel like Ghost Adventures is facking it i also think that Nick and Zach take turns being "possessed".

  • Summer leAnne Hill10/12/2010

Paranormal State or PRS is better than Ghost Hunters or Taps because for as ghost hunters only see that the case is paranormal but dont do anything about it and for as Paranormal State see's to the fact if its paranormal or not like ghost hunters but what they do differently then ghost hunters is they help the people they frive the entity out if nesissary and they come back for the people if they need them to.

    I concur.

I love Chip Coffey. He explains things well and I don't feel so weird, having had paranormal experiences. My new favorite show is Ghost Lab. They get amazing EVPs.
