Ghost Movies for Halloween Night

October 31^st is looming closer and if you have no other plans for Halloween night, why not settle down with some spine-chilling movies? While slasher flicks with plenty of blood and gore are frightening enough, there is something extra scary about ghost movies, especially on the most spooky night of the year! Here are some suggestions for top ghost movies for Halloween.

Ghost Ship (2002)

When a salvage crew is approached by a man (Jack Ferriman played by Desmond Harrington) telling them he has spotted a vessel floating around in the Bering Sea, they quickly head out to investigate on their tug boat.. After a little research they realise that the boat is the Antonia Graza, a luxury liner that disappeared in 1962. Not long after the team manage to board the ship, strange things begin to happen. Maureen (Julianna Marguiles) sees a little girl, Greer (Iasiah Washington) hears a woman singing and the other members of the crew find the skeletons of former salvage crews who have attempted to board the ship. As well as the weird discoveries though, they find large quantities of gold and plan to take it to shore - until their tug boat explodes leaving them stranded. What follows has to be seen to be believed but it is a very chilling film from beginning to end!

The Dark (2005)

Although this film has moments that are completely ridiculous, there is no doubt that a shiver will run down your spine many times throughout. Based on the novel Sheep by Simon Maginn, The Dark is set in the Welsh countryside. The story begins with Adele (Maria Bello) taking her daughter Sarah (Sophie Stuckey) to visit her father James (Sean Bean). It is clear that Adele and Sarah don't get on brilliantly, but in spite of being separated from her father, Sarah and James are very close. While the three of them are exploring the miles and miles of cliffs surrounding James' farmhouse, Sarah spots a memorial with the word "Annwynn" engraved onto it. Dafydd, a local man, explains that Annwyn is the afterlife. When Sarah later disappears after slipping on the rocks, Adele becomes convinced that she is still alive and sets about finding her daughter. A speight of odd occurrences lead Adele to think she has found the answer, in the form of a little girl called Ebrill - who died many years ago.

The Dark has the tagline "One of the living for one of the dead" which may give a hint as to how the story plays out but even with that clue, the plot is complicated. It is an amazing ghost movie for Halloween night - but if you are sensitive to disturbing scenes, you'll be better off avoiding it.

The Others (2001)

An awesome ghost movie with a shocking ending, The Others stars Nicole Kidman as Grace, the mother of two young children who are sensitive to the light. Her husband is fighting in the war so Grace is left raising Anne and Nicholas alone in their enormous house. To stop the light getting in, the doors and curtains remain closed at all times, and Grace insists that every door is locked once it has been walked through. Grace is a very strict woman, and teaches her children lessons from the Bible every day. Their routine becomes a little upturned when three servants arrive to help take care of the house. Bertha, Mr Tuttle and Lydia are odd folk but they all do their jobs well. However, Anne begins to talk of a boy named Victor who has been in the house and when other weird things start happening, Grace gives in to the idea that there may be "Others" in the house with them.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Dr Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is a child psychologist who, after celebrating the success of his work, is shot by a former patient who never overcame his problems. In the autumn, Crowe is determined not to fail again and begins work with a new patient, Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment). Cole lives with his mother and is a very withdrawn child who draws odd pictures and doesn't have any friends. After gaining Cole's trust, Cole tells Malcolm that he sees dead people. After initially thinking that Cole may have more problems than originally thought, Malcolm realises that maybe Cole really can see dead people. With a little encouragement, Cole begins to communicate with the ghosts in order to help them peacefully move on to the other side with very surprising consequences.

The twist at the end of this move is legendary - and even if you have seen it before, the effect of watching it never goes away.

Ghost (1990)

This is not necessarily typical among Halloween ghost movies, but as the title suggests - it is definitely about a ghost! When Sam (Patrick Swayze) discovers discrepancies in some bank accounts at work one day, he confides in his friend and co-worker Carl (Tony Goldwyn) and plans to investigate further. Sam's plan comes to an abrupt end when, while walking home with his fiancee Molly (Demi Moore), they are attacked and he is killed. Sam doesn't initially realise he is dead but when he does, he sets about trying to find his killer. During his digging, he realises that his murder was a set up and is concerned that Molly might be in danger so he contacts Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), a fake medium, for help. Both Oda Mae and Sam are astounded when they realise that she can actually hear him and he follows her around until she agrees to help him warn Molly.

Although Ghost isn't considered a scary movie, it has many moments that will make you jump and give you a feeling of uneasiness. If you aren't into being terrified while watching a ghost movie, this might be the one for you.
