There have been many legends of haunted roads and highways documented. The TV show "Supernatural" even explored the concept in one of its episodes. Pee-Wee Herman caught a ride with a ghost trucker in "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure." Apparently there are plenty of restless dead haunting the roads of the Philippines as well.
Director Yam Laranas has been working on his latest project, "The Road," which appears to be addressing the subject of ghosts haunting our most widely used means of travel. No official synopsis for the film has been given, but the director has dropped several hints all over his personal blog. From what I can gather, it's about a road that is haunted because of a horrific incident that occurred 30 years ago. This triggered a chain reaction of terrible things happening that has caused it to become even more riddled with ghosts.
Some of the hints Laranas dropped have been: "Thirty years is not too long ago," "The dead remembers and will never forget," "This road is not letting you leave," "They never leave you alone," and "You drive. You get lost. You are alone." There are even more hints with accompanying images and videos for you to check on his blog.
I'm always up for a good ghost story. "The Road" looks like it's going to deliver a very atmospheric and chilling tale of encountering the dead on the isolated roadways of an unfamiliar area. I can't think of anywhere worse to encounter angry or upset apparitions than out in the middle of nowhere. The teaser trailer does a great job of establishing the dark and disturbing tone of the film.
Laranas is known for his talent in creating an environment through his use of tone and lighting, thanks to his training as a cinematographer. The director is best known for his work on the ghostly 2004 film "Sigaw," which he remade for English audiences as "The Echo." His latest film, "Patient X," was released in 2009.
"The Road" stars Carmina Villarroel, Rhian Ramos, TJ Trinidad, and Wendell Ramos. The film is set for release in October in the Philippines. There's no word yet as to when we'll be able to see it in the United States. It will be subtitled in English.
