Ghosts in the "Legend of Zelda" Video Games

k. ferguson
My family loves video games. My favorites include older Nintendo systems like the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo and N64. My top five video games with ghostly characters are from my vintage Legend of Zelda collection. Each selection has a brief description of where the ghost is located. All of these games are great for the whole family.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the N64
This great video game has "Dampe", the ghostly grave keeper who hangs out at night in the cemetery in Kakariko Village. According to the Zelda history, Dampe the Gravekeeper died during the 7 years Link was missing. His ghost challenges Link to mini games to gain extra rupies and heart pieces. When Link is a boy, Dampe is alive, but when Link uses the Ocarina of Time and quickly ages to a teen, only Dampe's ghost remains. Wander around the cemetery in Kakariko Village to find him.

"The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" for the Nintendo Wii and GameCube
In this game, the ghostly character you meet is the Hero's Spirit, or the Golden Wolf. This character is there to teach Link skills necessary to complete the game. You must find the different Howling Stones and howl the proper melody. When you do, you will be transported to a magical land and the Golden Wolf will take the form of the Hero's Spirit. You learn seven hidden skills by doing this. It is vital to the game.

"The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" for the Nintendo GameCube
Phantom Ganon is the ghostly presence in the Wind Waker. He is tough to beat, but Link eventually does and instead of disappearing, the apparition-type enemy is scolded by the real Ganon's voice and is banished. Phantom Ganon does return in other games, but this is the best game to see and battle him in. When you beat him, you gain his phantom sword.

"The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" for the Super Nintendo

This is the first game where we meet a Poe. Poe is a ghost that haunts the game in various places. You have to hunt down these ghosts to complete the game. Every Zelda game after this one has a variation of a Poe, you just need to search them out and defeat them. They are fast, and can be hard to beat! These require plenty of patience and scheming to catch.

"The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" for the GameBoy
In this game, Nakura haunts Link. Nakura is a ghost that wants Link to take him back to his house and his grave. You must complete this mini part of the game in order to gain a Secret Seashell. (You need to collect all 26 of these shells to get the powerful Seashell Sword.) You can also irritate Nakura by sprinkling magic powder on his grave. He will threaten to curse you, but nothing ever happens to you.
