Ghosts, Spirits and Unexplained Happenings

My True Life Experience with a Departed Spirit

Doreen Bradley Satter, RN
I just read an interesting article written by a fellow AC writer. He and his family lived in a home that apparently had a few ghosts or spirits occupying the space too. It was a well-written, interesting article and I began thinking about a couple of unexplained happenings my family and I experienced many years ago.

My husband died when he was only 34 years old. My children were five and seven at the time. As you can imagine, it was a terrible shock for all of us. Fortunately, upon his death, our new home was totally paid off because of mortgage insurance we had the foresight to buy at the time we purchased the home. This allowed us to be able to stay in our home and me not having to get a job.

It was a very different experience without my husband there with us, but we were doing fairly well with good friends, neighbors and my parents who lived nearby.inOne evening a few months after his death, I was sitting on the floor in my son's room, helping him get undressed and into his pajamas.

I pulled off his shoes and socks and shirt and pants, placing them all in a neat pile on the floor next to us, and slipped on his pajamas. Only he and I were in the room. My daughter was in her own room playing. We stood up and he got into his bed. and I bent over to pick up his little pile of clothing, but his socks weren't there. I checked inside the clothes and in his shoes and on the floor, in his bed, and his feet again, just in case I had forgotten to take them off, bit no socks anywhere. I looked under the bed, around the entire room but couldn't find his socks. We never found them again! My son still talks about how his socks disappeared that night. We could never explain it..

A short time later, maybe even that same week or very soon afterward, another odd thing happened. I always closed all our bedroom doors every night. I was taught to do that in case of a fire and, fortunately, my children weren't the kind that needed their doors left open and night lights on. They were used to having their doors closed at night. I also closed by own bedroom door, which was just across the hall from their rooms.

That particular night a friend and her three children were staying with us, her in my room and her children with my children. I had a flip lock on my bedroom door which I locked. In the morning, my bedroom door was unlocked and standing wide open! That was the second mysterious thing that happened. I should add here that none of us walked in out sleep.

During the time these two things happened, which was within the first six months after my husband's death, both my seven year old daughter and I heard 'someone' walking in the hallway outside our bedrooms at night. Oddly too, for some reason, neither one of us were frightened hearing the noises at night either. About six months after his death, the strange noises stopped and nothing more happened for about three years.

I have thought about this for years, and I have come to the conclusion that it must have been the spirit of my husband, checking on us, making sure we were doing OK.. When he was satisfied that we were doing alright, he left, not having to worry about us any longer. That's the only explanation the children and I could ever come up with.

Several years later, we decided to sell our home and my children and I moved in with my good friend and her children who lived in the home directly behind ours. These were the same friends that were staying with us the night the door was unlocked and opened.

My daughter and I and my friend began hearing 'someone' walking around the house at night again. A couple of months after the noises began again, we had visitors from out of state come to stay for a few days. They reported hearing the footsteps too. (we hadn't told them anything about it either). Interestingly enough, they were frightened by the noises but my friend and I and our children never were. After a couple of months, the 'night visitor' left and never returned again.

We decided it must have been my husband, once again, checking on us to make sure we were still OK, after we moved from our home to our friend's house..

I know many of you don't believe in ghosts or spirits or things that cannot be seen or explained, but do you have any better explanation for us?

This story reminds me of one of my little cousins experiences. My aunt, both my cousins and me were in my aunts living room and we was looking for some allergy medicine for my aunt. We looked every where in the living room for it and we knew it was there. We had a bathroom in the back of the house and a bedroom that was connected, but we never use the bedroom or went in it because it was my other aunts that had died. My little cousin didn't know anything about her because we never talked about her in front of my little cousin. So my little cousin went in the back room to use the bathroom and she came back out and had the allergy medicine. My aunt asked her where she got that, and my little cousin said that grandma Becky gave it to her.

Is it just me, or can anyone else see a man's face in front of the door frame?

I love this story and the idea, my grandmother swore that my grandfather came ot her after death and would pull on her big toe, until he got her attention,. He used to do that in life, when she found an insurance paper, he was fine. He didn't come around anymore.

Great article. I love the idea that our departed loved ones are still checking on us to make sure we are doing well.

Thanks Deneale, it's been years and years since all this happened, and we all have been doing fine. My children are grown with families of their own and we haven't had any more 'visitors', but my daughter has had a visitor in her home, upstairs. It was a woman singing to a child. These things are very interesting to us all.

ATTENTION EVERYONE: I wrote this article late at night, got tired and went to bed with the thought to proof it first thing in the morning. I was so surprised when I got back to the page to start the corrections and the story had been already accepted. (I was expecting the usual week or so wait who thought it would be just a few hours!) so I didn't have time to correct errors. They are blantant and now they are permanent! Sorry about that! (Don't want to complain much as I was really PLEASED with the quick response time!)
