G.I. Joe Halloween Costume Guide

Rex Banner
G.I. Joe is making a resurgence in popularity with the release of the new movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Both the classic heroes and villains from the show will most certainly be popular costume choices this Halloween. Whether you are a new fan of G.I. Joe or are remembering your childhood fondly, it is easy to create your own Halloween costume. There are many characters to choose from if you want to go the extra mile, but this guide will show you how to create a basic G.I. Joe grunt costume. The linked external references provided in this guide will help you to customize your costume.

Attire

The easiest choice is camouflage fatigues. You will instantly be recognized as a member of the armed forces, and anyone up to date on current affairs will likely guess G.I. Joe. Add a pair of black combat boots for added effect. Check out the figure and accessory archive at Yo Joe! to determine the best attire for your costume.

Accessories

Again, if you are working on a specific character, refer to the archive previously listed to determine which accessories you will need. Some ideas for a basic soldier include a helmet or hat, backpack and gun. Many G.I. Joe characters had animal partners, which may be a nice component of your costume. Some also had mustaches, so do some more research in this area to develop your character.

Finishing Touches

You might want to add a little face paint to complete your costume. Some characters may require some paint. A nice silver-faced Destro comes to mind, and would be a definite crowd pleaser! To make sure people can differentiate between a regular army man and a G.I. Joe, you might want to create some homemade G.I. Joe labels for your backpack or clothing. Whether you choose to represent G.I. Joe or COBRA, be sure to embrace the attitude your costume demands.

Where to Buy

Probably the best place to start looking is an army surplus store. These are located in cities across the country, but you will find links to online stores below. You will find comparable items at all stores, but be on the lookout for unique items at your local store. Additionally, prices vary, but you might be able to get some good deals on used items at a local thrift shop.
