Gift Giving Ideas for the Male Teacher

Janet Trieschman
I was a bit put back the first time I found out my daughter's kindergartener teacher was a man. Not only was he male, he was young. It took me a day or two to get the idea of a lovingly older woman I had envisioned out of my head. Now that has past, he has turned out to be a wonderful teacher. One who gets down on the kids level and spend time talking with them. As a classroom helper, he is kind to me but the kids are his first priority and it is noticeable, which I appreciate. To show our gratitude, we are faced with the thought of a Christmas present to give him. Being a male teacher, some traditional teacher gifts are not appropriate. Here is a list of items we are considering.

Gift Card

While many consider this a cop out, a gift card can be a practical gift. Possibly one to a video rental store or a teachers supply store. If you know your teacher has a passion for something like coffee, this could also be a great idea for a gift card.

Gift of Food

Let's face it, men like to eat. Food can be a great idea for a gift. Possibly something your child can help you make. This would personalize the effort just that much more. If you aren't into baking or making a food gift, a gift basket with purchased food items can be just as exciting.

Gift Baskets or Themed Gifts

A basket of themed items can be a welcomed gift. We are considering a variation on the movie gift card with a movie themed gift basket. A gift basket that would include the gift card for a movie rental and popcorn and such for a full movie-watching event.

Donations

When you are truly stumped for a gift, you might consider making a donation in the teacher's name. While this is not a tangible object you give. Many teachers get a lot of goofy gifts. A non-gift via a donation to a charity in their name can be refreshing.

Christmas Ornament

Making a Christmas ornament with your child to give to the teacher can be fun to do and give. Make sure to include your child's name and the year on the back of the ornament. This idea will be fun for years to come as their tree gets decorated, the teacher can reminisce on past teaching years.

Photo

Consider a gift that includes your child's photo. It could be a Christmas Ornament, a refrigerator magnet or a book of thoughts and drawings that your child makes to give to the teacher don't forget to include his or her photo in the book.

What a waste of pixels! Gift card? Food? Ornament? Seriously, you bothered to actually write an article to come up with those amazingly clever and innovative gifts?
