Gift Ideas for Your Insect Loving Child

Christie Silvers
Many children are amazed with the life of bugs in their own backyard. These children will pick up, carry around, and examine every bug that comes their way. Luckily, there are many things out there on the market that a parent can use to help their children cultivate their love of insects even more.

Magnifying Glass - In order to let your child examine their insect bounty even closer, you could supply them with a nice magnifying glass. Of course, you'll want to make sure that they don't use it to burn the bugs with sunlight. EEK! Show your child the different colors, lines, shapes, sizes, and details of the insects that they are looking at. They'll be amazed at the things they never noticed before looking through the magnifying glass.

Bug Net - Your bug bounty hunter will need something to catch those pesky flying insects with. So why not a bug net to help in their search of the bug unknown. You'll laugh at the site of your child running through the yard swinging the net to and fro with massive determination.

Gardening Tools - What better way to find underground bugs than to dig them up yourself. That's where child-sized gardening tools can come in handy. You'll child will soon be wielding their small shovel and rake with the expertise of any older bug hunter. Just be sure to stand back when they come running to show you what they've recently dug up under the outdoor trash can.

Butterfly House - Butterfly houses are a great way for your child to research the life cycle of a butterfly. The word of the day is pupa! In the end, they'll be able to watch their very own caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly.

Ant Farm - If you're brave enough to allow the insect world to infiltrate your own domicile, then you may consider getting your insect-loving child their very own ant farm. They'll be able to watch how a colony of ants work together, create homes and tunnels, and simply survive. Just be sure to warn them that if the ants get loose, the exterminator will be called and they'll see the end of their ants' life cycles.

Learning Tools - These items are less fun for many kids on the hunt for bugs, but a good insect book can teach your child lots. Books, posters, kids' magazines, movies are all excellent gift ideas for the insect-loving child in your life (but I'd be sure to throw in something fun to go along with these).

If your child is a bug lover, don't fret. There are many items out there that will help them explore this interesting topic. We may not be friendly to bugs, but kids are intrigued. So help foster that sense of exploration, no matter what the subject of exploration is. With warmer weather comes more bugs! Enjoy them!

Great article Christie - I used a lot of these ideas with my bug-loving 4 year old on his recent birthday! These are really neat ways to introduce young children to scientific exploration.

My first impression was totally that this was going to be about the actual insects. 1) Go into the woods. 2) Look for some moss 3) The brown thingyamagig only comes out at midday for one hour... Seriously, that's what I was thinking and then I was thinking, well, isn't that taking all the fun away from the kid? Ay yi yi.

    Excellent suggestions!
There are several members of the "bug club" at my house. We have even had a "bug club" birthday party and everybody went bug hunting in the yard... they loved it!
