Gift Ideas for Single Moms

Heather K. Adams
I'm a single mother, and I just hate it when my family asks me what I want for Christmas. I never know what to tell them, because what I really want is some help!

But saying "Help!" in response to those questions won't get me the best reaction. So I've come up with some practical (and not so practical) gift ideas for women like me.

Since single moms don't get a lot of time to spend on herself, get her something she won't normally splurge on for herself. A gift certificate for a day spa, a massage, a pedicure, a makeover... anything to make her feel feminine again. I know with my busy schedule, I don't make the time to do those things. But if I had a gift certificate to use, I would definitely go and appreciate the down time.

Women just don't spend money on themselves. A great idea is a gift of gourmet coffee, exotic jellies and jams, a nice bottle of wine, a luxurious body lotion, or a warm bathrobe. These are things we would never buy for ourselves, but it's fun to try new things.

The single moms I know are always strapped for cash. Gifts I've gotten in the past which were really helpful were gift cards to stores I frequently shop. Walmart.com has a few options when it comes to gift cards: the traditional card, the online gift card, and photo gift cards.

One thing I never get done is photo developing. We single moms love our kids, and we adore snapping photos, but do we ever get around to getting those pictures developed? An easy gift idea from snapfish.com is to pre-pay for prints for the single mom to use for those endless disks of digital photos. It takes no time at all for her to upload those memories, and the prints are delivered to her house.

Sometimes we just need a break. Offering to take our children off our hands for a while is really the best present. It doesn't cost any money, and time is really the one thing single moms don't have enough of. Whether we decide to use that alone time for paying bills, catching up on laundry, or relaxing in a bubble bath with a glass of wine and a good book, the time to just do whatever we want will be cherished and appreciated.
