Gift Ideas for Valentine's Day - Pets

Brandon Elliott
While most Valentines prefer the traditional gift of candy, cards, flowers, and/or jewelry as their way of showing their love, there are other gifts that could mean just as much to them, if not more--pets. Pets are friendly, loving, and a joy to have around as long as they are well trained. Here are some types of pets you could give to your lover for Valentine's Day.

A Puppy

Everyone knows girls are suckers for adorable little puppies! When she looks into it's big eyes, she will fall madly in love with you. The best part is, you can get a puppy from your local Humane Society and help out an animal in need of a home while you are busy pleasing your valentine. Click here for more information about the Humane Society. Also, you can check out your local bulletin board or newspaper for people selling or giving away puppies.

Love Birds

Love birds are the epitome of, well, love. Nothing can say more about your relationship with your valentine than two love birds chirping away, never leaving each other's side. They can live to be 15-30 years old and make great pets. Go to your local pet store to buy a pair of these loving creatures without destroying your bank account.

A Hamster

Who can resist the cuteness of these furry little animals? Certainly not your valentine. Hamsters are easy to take care of and would make for a perfect Valentine's Day gift. They are friendly and make great companions. Hamsters can also be found at your local pet store, or local bulletin board/newspaper.

A Ferret

Ferrets are great pets to give as gifts. They are playful, energetic, and a joy to have around. Although they spend 14 to 18 hours a day sleeping, they are very active when they are awake. Ferrets were relatively rare pets until the 1980s and since then have become a more popular domestic animal. You can get your loved one a ferret at a pet store, breeder, or rescue center.

A Guinea Pig

Guinea Pigs are not pigs, nor are they from Guinea. They are, however, awesome gifts to give to your valentine for Valentine's Day. To me, they are really similar to hamsters, but a heck of a lot bigger. They can be kept in the same type of cage as a hamster and are easy pets to take care of. Look for shelters in your area where you can rescue a guinea pig before you go to the pet store.

If you do decide to get your beloved Valentine a pet for Valentine'e Day, be sure to include necessary materials needed for housing that particular pet. Good luck, and Happy Valentine's Day.

Good idea, and I second Geannie's comment of making sure the receiver is ready for a pet and really wants the pet.

Great idea, as long as the receiver is ready for a pet. :)

Very neat. I think a cute little kitten is a great Valentine's Day gift.

I'd only get someone a live animal for a gift if I already knew they wanted one.

Nicely written and thoughtful article. My wife would KILL me if I brought home a pet for Valentine's though. :-)

If my husband boyfriend brought me home a living thing that had to be fed and walked and groomed and generally babysat, I'd KILL him!
