Gift Ideas for a Writer

Bel Marshall
Writers are a different breed of people and when it comes to gifts they can often be difficult to buy for because of their often unique lifestyle. When purchasing a gift, consider the personality of your writer but the following list is always a guaranteed hit with most writers.

Writer's Market 2011 Deluxe Edition

This is the bible of most serious writers and even of those who are not always so serious. With a new updated edition every year and the deluxe edition including a subscription to the online edition and resources this is a gift that will keep giving through the entire year.

This can be found in any bookstore or ordered online http://www.writersdigestshop.com/product/writers-market-deluxe-edition/

Anyone who ever writes for an online medium or has a desire to write articles for newspapers or magazines this is a must have. AP usually updates every year and the latest version of the book is often hard to find in bookstores unless they are a campus bookstore. An All Nighter Basket

Writers are known to write for days when inspiration hits. This means too much caffeine, more sugar than the human body should ever consume a lot of salt and something comfy to wear. A pound of their favorite coffee, tea or hot cocoa, along with snack foods or a gift certificate for their favorite delivery foods and a pair of warm fuzzy pajamas, robe or the coveted snuggie will keep your writer going for days. You may be tempted to toss in some healthy snacks and they will be appreciated. If your writer is deeply engrossed in their project they may not notice that the snacks are actually not created to increase their blood pressure, clog their arteries or add six inches to their waistline by the time they have finished their project. One can always hope just make sure there are plenty of "comfort snacks" in there as well.

Journals

Writers write! They don't care if it's for profit or for their own catharsis, writers simply need to write and there are very few who don't have piles of journals stacked in some closet or storage unit. The type of journal is going to depend on your writer and who they are but something both practical (practical means there are blank pages to write on) and reflective of their personality. If your writer is conservative often a plain leather bound journal is fine. If they are fashionable, something pretty always works. It really doesn't matter; this is one gift your write is guaranteed to use and use often.

Micro Recorder

If you have spent more than five minutes with a writer, you have seen it. Writers find inspiration in everything and often in that perfect moment of that perfect idea, they have left their computer at home or it's three in the morning and they are too tired to start writing. Micro recorders are perfect for these moments of inspiration. They are small enough to carry in your pocket, purse, glove box or have by the bedside table. Inspiration hits and with a micro recorder nothing is lost. Your writer has their idea recorded and they go on with their day until they are ready to sit down and write. This is one item that no writer should ever live without.

Massage Gift Certificate

Every writer spends too much time in front of their computer and few are known to really maintain good posture for hours on end. When the writing is done, your writer will be favoring tight shoulders, a sore neck and often a painful lower back. A massage is one of those things few people will spend money on for themselves but is a wonderful investment in their well being.

Any of these gifts will be welcomed by any writer in your life and who knows you just might be contributing to the next bestseller as well. Always consider the lifestyle and tastes of your writer when purchasing a gift for them but for most, any gift that is personal and well thought out is a favorite among all who write for fun, profit or just to maintain their sanity.
