Family Dollar and Dollar General stores are both an excellent source for reasonably priced quality items. I have shopped in both of these establishments in many locations for 20 years and I've always been satisfied with the product. Of course, keep an eye open for good sales at local superstores or department stores like Sears, Target and Kohl's as well.
1) Event tickets or a fishing license. Fishing licenses run about $15 for a basic license. If dad likes ball games, sporting events, movies, concerts or plays, you can give him a tickets to attend. Order the tickets directly from the website and you will often save the handling price of ticket dealers.
2) Book, Magazine or Newspaper Subscription: Choose something on his interest level. Motorcycling, Dog breeding, Food and Wine, travel, etc. A magazine offers a nice way to relax for 10 minutes or so when you lack the time get into anything else. He can read it on his break. You can subscribe to a magazine for $10-$15 per year. Barnes and Noble Booksellers offer lovely hardcover special interest books at very low prices in their discount area.
3) A basic outdoor folding chair or footstool; Dads invariably suffer from back pain, tendinitis or some muscular pain. They often don't relax enough. Look for a chair with armrests and a beverage holder that can be carried in a canvas bag. You can find these for $10 or $12 at Walmart, Target or Discount Stores. Get him a nice comfy chair for outdoors or a footstool for his chair for indoors.
4) A chef's apron or long-handled grill utensils Dads love to grill, so get him some good equipment so that he can enjoy his hobby and you can enjoy the food!
5) A hat and or sunglasses. Dads always need these and often lose them!
6) A car organizer that goes between the seats and holds beverages, CDs, pens, papers, change, etc.
7) An insulated beverage cup or thermos: Get a nice recloseable model for his coffee or water that is easy to use on the road. Some of them can have photo inserts so he can look at his loved ones!
8) Outdoor yard games: horseshoes, bocce, croquet, badminton, tetherball, soccer goal and ball, street hockey set etc. We've had hours of family fun with a cheap badminton set. This is a great way to unwind and relax with the family.
9) Fireworks: Legal, of course! Find out what your local ordinances are, first. For some reason dads love fireworks! Don't buy the multi-packs; they have a lot of sparklers and smoke bombs for filler. Go to the outdoor vendors or firework dealers and choose his favorites. In some states, you will need to be over 18 to purchase.
10) Hobby equipment: You can many less expensive items that hobbies require: carpentry tools, golf or tennis balls, fishing lures or bait, soccer or basketballs, arrows, ammunition for paint ball or airsoft guns, sport safety equipment, etc.
Many of these are just suggestions to get you thinking. Find out what the men in your life really enjoy and take the time to select a special gift just for them.
