Gifts of Love for Mother's Day

Claire Luna-Pinsker
Mother's Day is here. This is the day we celebrate the unconditional love our mother's have given us throughout our lifetime. Loving mothers are not naturally your birth mother. Today there are adoptive mothers, grandmothers who have assumed the main mother role, single parents who assume both paternal roles, and long term foster mothers, for examples. Many times birth mothers for whatever reasons don't exhibit or take a responsible mother's role. Mother's Day we honor mothers who stepped up in a child's life.

I offer a few selective ideas for celebrating the gifts of love our true mother's have given us. Returning the gift of love in a special way is the best Mother's Day gift.

1-Flowers.

Florists do the majority of their year's business on Mother's Day. Buy a lovely bouquet of flowers for the mother in your life. Fresh flowers can be expensive, so other economical ideas are also available. Buy a live plant, something that will last and grow with time. Buy a potted plant or buy flats of planting flowers for your mother's yard. Take the time to help plant them, especially if your mother enjoys flowers but physically is unable to tend to a garden herself. If you don't have the time, enlist the help of a teenager in the neighborhood who is willing to come by weekly and do upkeep. By all means if you have the finances to hire a landscaper do so, but a gift of love should be a personal one, and, "hands on," expresses this nicely. For mother's who are allergic to flowers but still enjoy flowers, maybe a nice artificial silk bouquet would be nice. Plastic is tacky.

2-Edible Arrangements.

"Edible Arrangements," are fresh cut fruit made into flower arrangements. Fruit are cut into flower and leaf shapes. You can ask for cantaloupe, honeydews, grapes, strawberries, and pineapples. They're arranged in containers with fruit affixed to long wooden skewers. "Edible Arrangements," also offer chocolate covered fruit, such as strawberries, apples, or bananas. This is a nutritious gift to offer a unique flower arrangement to the mother in your life. They're also great for mothers who happen to be allergic to flowers but still enjoy flower arrangements. Edible arrangements run in cost from forty-five dollars to two hundred dollars. You can go to this website, www.EdibleArrangements.com and find further information about arrangements, delivery costs, and locations of stores.

For creative people, and to save cost, you can make your own edible arrangements by shaping fruits into flowers, placing them on skewers and into colorful containers covered with clear or tinted cellophane wrapping. Just remember this is a gift that should be made as close to Mother's Day as possible, to assure fresh looking fruit. You can search for websites offering information on how to make fruit arrangements for assistance.

3-Food.

Maybe your mother enjoys cooking, but I don't know of any mother who wouldn't like a break once in awhile. Going out to dinner on Mother's Day, at your mother's selection of restaurants if at all possible, is a wonderful gift. Just make certain you obtain reservations early because Mother's Day happens to be very busy for restaurants.

Inviting your mother over to your home for dinner and relaxation can be an ideal Mother's Day love gift. To be surrounded by family are some mother's dreams. Family members are scattered all over today, too busy to take time to get together. If you can arrange for everyone to be together it can be a special Mother's Day. Just make sure you cook something your mother enjoys. There are also websites that offer fully cooked gourmet meals that can be delivered. These are ideal love gifts for senior mothers in nursing homes tired of standard fare, invalids confined to home, or for any other mothers who'd enjoy a prepared meal. One website to try is www.dinewise.com They offer gourmet prepared meals that can be delivered nationwide. They recommend having orders placed by May 6, 2009 for Mother's Day delivery.

4-Time.

As I mentioned above, people are just so busy today to find time to get together. Arranging everyone to meet together in one place can be a special Mother's Day gift. Offering your own time to devote to seeing your mother on other days then Mother's Day, can also be a great gift of love. Making time to call your Mother more often, just to tell her you love her, can mean a lot to your mother. Offering assistance to your Mother, for example, fixing a squeaky front door, can be simple, but mean a lot to her. Time slips by so fast and we never know what the next day will bring, so tell your Mother you love her. Find time to share conversations about your childhood. Just be there.

5-Children.

For mother's who have young children, a nice gift for Mother's Day would be having significant others offer to take responsibility for children for an entire day, giving a mother time to relax and do something she'd like to do. You can offer a spa gift certificate, a movie certificate, or just time to lie in bed doing nothing. Basically give the gift of personal time to someone who gives so much of herself.

Help your children make simple handmade gifts and cards to give on Mother's Day. Remind children how important their mother's role in their life is, teach them appreciation. Teaching children to show respect and love towards their mother who gave them life, or the woman who raised them, will also help them become responsible future parents. Homemade gifts are worth more than any store bought gifts if made and given from the heart. (I know, because my children are all grown and I still have boxes of handmade gifts and cards stored away in the attic.)

6-Personal Memories.

This is a great idea for creative people, but even uncreative people can make this a special gift for Mother's Day. You can make a photo album of photos taken with your mother, or make a memory scrapbook for your Mother. Many mothers are so busy at events and taking photos themselves that they rarely get themselves in shots. Search for old photographs and scan them onto a disk or even collect the photos in a scrapbook. You can jot down personal memories of happy times being with your mother. With everything being done online, letter writing's fading away. Take time to write a letter in your own hand to your mother on Mother's Day. Your mother will appreciate it.

7-The Greatest Mother's Day Gift is Love.

Expressing your own personal way of showing love to your mother on Mother's Day is the best gift you can offer. Maybe you're estranged from your mother and haven't taken the first step to resolve minor past issues. Maybe you want to reach out to your birth mother, as an adoptive child. This Mother's Day might be the day to repair these relationships. Time drifts by so quickly, and we never know what the next day will bring. This Mother's Day make sure your mother's aware you appreciate and love her.
