1. Puzzles - Puzzles are both fun and challenging for a child who likes putting things together. It also helps them recognize certain patterns or how objects are connected as they go along solving the puzzle. One example is Hasbro 3 Pack Kids 24pc Puzzles: Nickelodeon's Blue's Room, SpongeBob & Dora. For 3 puzzles it costs only $9.99 and is available at Amazon through Toy's 'R Us. Another example is the all-time favorite Rubik's Cube that sells for only $9.99 also on Amazon.
2. Gameboards - This is another toy which I'm quite fond of. Gameboards teaches children about strategy, sportsmanship and of course, it's a good activity for the whole family to enjoy. Look at The Original SuDoku with Wood Playing Pieces which is a gameboard/puzzle combination available on Amazon for only $7.99. Another one is the Password Junior Board Game this is the junior version where players guess the password through clues given by their team mates. It's a word association game your gifted learner will enjoy. Available at BoardGames USA for only $9.99.
3. ComputerSoftwares - Whether your child is interested in learning a new skill like typing, or wants to know more about a subject his interested in like astronomy or botany or just to take a little breather and play some games, computer softwares are great options. Some of the softwares we use are Where In The U.S.A. Is Carmen Sandiego? and Learning Company's Reader Rabbit Softwares which are both available for under $10.00.
4. Art Supplies - Gifted children are naturally creative and providing them with art supplies like paints, brushes, drawing paper, easel, chalk, clay, scissors, glue, beads, stickers, etc. will help your child occupied intellectually. Keep these supplies within your child's reach so that when his creative juices kicks in he can easily transform it into his own brand of art. There are art supplies which come in kits and are both handy and affordable. One example is the Activity Bucket which costs only $6.99.
5. Books - My personal favorite. If you want a child who is a strong reader and a curious learner, I suggest you invest on some good quality books. Books not only keep your child's mind stimulated, it also opens doors to new interests and learning opportunities. I'm not going to enumerate any example because there are just too many good titles out there available for you and your gifted child. Most books are priced below $10 and if you want to read it for free, go to your local public library. I save a ton of money by going to our library once a week, my child not only gets to read her beloved books for free, most library's also offer weekend activities for children.
So you see, keeping your gifted child happy doesn't need to be expensive. All you need is a nice mix of imagination and common sense.
