Gilmore Girls is Back on Track: Good Writing, Good Timing, and Lots of Junk Food

Erin McMaster
Isn't Gilmore Girls so much better with Lorelai and Rory actually speaking and getting along? Last season was painful to watch because it was more like Gilmore Battle than it was Gilmore Girls. But now that the girls are girls again and their lives are connected once more, I actually care about what is going on in their lives.

Rory's excitement over her love rocket has subsided since Logan doesn't want Rory to visit him before Christmas. She could be on her tour of Asia right now but instead is in Stars Hallow trying to act like a grown-up. Lorelai is back in Lorelai fashion; once again she is the mother you love and the best friend you need. Since Rory can't go to Asia, Lorelai brings Asia to Rory by making their home, well, Asia - complete with dessert sushi.

Unfortunately Rory's father, Christopher, calls in the middle of Asia night and Rory figures out Lorelai slept with him. Rory isn't excited by the idea and seems to find him an even less suitable mate for Lorelai than I do. That has to speak volumes if Rory finds it such a bad idea for Lorelai to hook up with him. And it makes sense, I mean come on, haven't they tried being together at least twice and it not work out? Why anyone should expect this time to end any differently is beyond me.

Speaking of not working, let's talk about Luke. I get that this is the first season with new writers for the show, it even seems as if they are trying to fix some problems from last year. But when you build an entire series on two character's romantic tension so audiences beg for them to get together, you have one of two options. The first is you never, under any circumstances, let those two characters hook up. You keep the characters hot for each other and that chemistry there, but you never get them together. Which brings us to the second option. If the audiences want two characters to get together and you do write them into a relationship, you make sure it is a happy relationship that lasts. When the two break up it will piss off such a large portion of the audience it runs the risk of destroying the ratings. It will be interesting to see how the writers pull off this storyline.

I've always wanted Luke and Lorelai together. Some of her past boyfriends have been entertaining while others were utter duds. I'm fine with her having a love interest that isn't Luke. But I am horribly irritated with their friendship going down the drain. He was the friend she had to turn to when everything else in her life was going poorly. He was always more than the guy that poured her coffee in the diner. Now it will be impossible for them to go back to the Luke and Lorelai they were before they became Luke and Lorelai the couple. Either they will work things out and get back together or they're screwed. Luke's harsh words to Lorelai on the street emphasized this, but they also worked to make him come off as an asshole. I guess it happens when you're heartbroken and angry.

Poor Lane. She must have had some very terrible first sex if she is ready to swear it off forever after only having it once. Top off horrible sex with getting sick on your honeymoon, you can't really imagine anything worse happening to Lane. Except being pregnant, which gets thrown on her as well. Gilmore Girls is a show that typically tries to teach a lesson without really doing any teaching. It will be interesting to see everything works with Lane's pregnancy.

Overall it seems as though Gilmore Girls is back on track. The first few minutes were some of the better minutes in the past few seasons. The timing isn't quite as it was in the beginning, but the witty banter is on the rise. Pop culture references, lots of food, and the girls getting along suggest Gilmore Girls is going back to its roots and what works. The only things really missing this episode were Richard and Emily.
