For Gilt, it's offering unusual products that the others don't, and paving the way for new type offerings. Gilt was one of the first, if not the first, of these sites to offer special rates on hotel rooms. A first, these weren't spectacular values, and you could find similar deals with a halfway decent search at any travel site. Now, the deals have gotten much more spectacular. Gilt still lags in offering the really amazing deals on more realistic getaways, but they have the luxury market nailed.

One other thing Gilt pioneered is offering things other than clothing. The most phenomenal deal I've seen on the site is a brand new, 2011 Volkswagen Jetta in "Gilt Gold" for only $5995. That's right. Less than $6000 for a fully loaded car in a very cool shade you can't get elsewhere.

Most of these type sites function the same- you look at the items, decide on the spot whether you want to buy, and have 15 minutes to complete your transaction. If you don't, it's removed from your cart and someone else can buy it. In addition, most items cannot be returned. And finally, each sale only lasts a few days. If you see an Alexander McQueen dress marked down from $10000 to $3000, you'd better be able to decide within 15 minutes whether you can afford it or not. But really, if you're looking at Alexander McQueen garments, you probably already know what they cost and have the money for it. Overall, I recommend Gilt because they have access to a lot of the top designers and offer decent prices. Some of the other sites have better deals, but they don't offer the very top designers. I also like that Gilt is more unique in their offerings of things other than clothing. Sometimes their photography is a little more artistic, and I'd rather just see the item as it is, than all dressed up. And I wish they offered better prices than they do. They offer a deal on their shipping which allows you to buy anything within the same hour and not pay more for shipping, but some of the other sites allow you to do this for a whole day, so it's not as good a bargain as it sounds.
