Girl or Boy? The Truth Behind the Most Popular Baby Gender Prediction Methods

Sonya Galea
About 70% of expectant mothers want to know whether they are expecting a girl or a boy, and there are various semi-scientific methods on the web and on the market that claim to accurately predict the gender of your baby. But what does really work? Before you rush to the nearest baby store to buy pink or blue baby gear read the shocking results of my experience in the gender prediction world

Some time ago I published an article about several gender prediction methods I had found on the internet and on the market and since I was pregnant at the time I tried all of them to see what really works and what doesn't .

Here are my findings with regards to the semi scientific or non scientific gender prediction tests.

Girl or boy? The truth about Baby gender prediction - The Intelligender gender prediction test

The Intelligender test is gaining a lot of popularity both on the web and on the market.

How it works : The Intelligender test costs approximately $30 and uses a sample of the pregnant mother's morning urine to determine whether she's expecting a girl or boy.

It is relatively simple to use and the results are pretty straight forward, if the sample turns orange you are expecting a girl, if it gets a murky greenish color it's a boy. It is totally safe for the mother and the child but not for your pocket as if it carries quite a hefty price tag just for a spoonful of chemical and plastic container and a syringe.

My result - sorry it just didn't work for me!

Verdict - if you want to part with $30 and feel like peeing in a cup for fun, go ahead and do it, but don't rely on this method for accuracy. My feeling is that you have a 50% chance of getting it wrong.

Girl or boy? The truth about Baby gender prediction - The Chinese gender prediction chart and the various baby gender prediction calendars on the internet

Another increasingly popular method to determine your baby's sex is the Chinese gender prediction chart or the gender prediction calendars on the internet.

How it works - You can find these virtual tests on the popular websites like parenting.com or baby centre and if you are as curious as I am, they will be one of the first things you will try as soon as you find out you're pregnant.

This method is based on an ancient chart combining the mother's age with the date of the baby's conception in order to determine wheter you are expecting a boy or a girl. Totally harmless and free there is no harm done if you use this method but does it work.

My result- it is 50% accurate. In my first pregnancy I had tried out this method and it worked, but in my second pregnancy, I tried this method and didn't work this time round.

My verdict- My feeling is that just like the previous method, this gender prediction test is 50% accurate.

Girl or boy? The truth about Baby gender prediction - The shape of the belly method and other old wives' tales

How it works - The most common old wives tale you will hear as soon as you get pregnant is people telling you they can guess the sex of your baby according to the shape of your belly ( whether it is rounded or pointed) or whether you are caring high or low.

My result - I've had people giving me all sort of crazy predictions in both my pregnancies, and since I wanted to know the sex of the baby via an ultrasound both times, it was easy to find out who was guessing wrong.

My verdict- none of the people who tried to predict my children's gender based on the bulging shape of my belly got it right! Just like with the previous methods this method is just for fun!

Girl or boy? The truth about Baby gender prediction - Over all verdict

My overall verdict when it comes to gender prediction is that if you really want to know whether you are expecting a boy or a girl because you need to invest money in baby clothes or decorating a nursery, wait till you do an ultra sound and have both the technician and the doctor confirm the sex of your baby.

If you are having an amniocentesis, the results are even more accurate... so unless you want to risk repainting the freshly painted pink walls of your nursery blue, and return the cute little pink dress to the store to exchange it for a blue onesie, take these old wives tales and semi scientific methods for what they are - a fun guessing game with a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
