Girl, Interrupted

Movie-In-Review

Jessica Pierce
"Girl Interrupted" opens with a narrative, which sets an appropriate backdrop for the film: "Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the 60's. Or maybe I was just a girl... interrupted."

"Girl interrupted" is the true story of Suzanna Kaysen (played by Winona Ryder) an emotionally overwhelmed teenager, later diagnosed as having Borderline Personality Disorder, who is committed to a local psychiatric hospital by her parents in the 1960s. Unbeknownst to Suzanna, her "rest" turns into eighteen months at Claymoore Psychiatric Hospital. This movie chronicles Suzanna's new two year experience, during which she eventually befriends several patients, including a seductive sociopath named Lisa (played by Angelina Jolie.)

Fantastically comprised, the movie was associate produced by the real-life Suzanna Kaysen, which brings both depth and solidarity to her experience as it is portrayed on-screen. The phenomenal cast adds authentic flair to the characters they portray, including: Joanna Kerns as Suzanna's mom, Jared Leto as Toby (Suzanna's so-called boyfriend), Woopie Goldberg as Nurse Valerie, Clea Duvall as Georgina (a pathological liar), and Brittany Murphy as Daisy (a suicidal and self injurious bulimic.)

In the end, Suzanna learns more about living than she could have ever anticipated.

"Girl Interrupted" is a movie that is easily relatable by anyone who has lived, loved, lost, experienced, and came out on the other side a better person.

Interesting! Girl Interrupted was actually the final straw on what made me decide to go to treatment! The line where Winona Ryder said to Angelina Jolie "I'd rather be out there living than down here with you." I lost it, started bawling, and... the rest is history!

Jessica, excellent review. Do you know that I actually saw Girl Interrupted when I was at Renfrew? It was an "outing" during extended care!
