In the month since Kyle Smith was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, the entire community has pulled together to help in any way possible. A constant flow of donations has ensured that all bone marrow tests taken thus far have been paid for. Though an exact number can not be known because Mike Taylor has gone to individuals and door-to-door and people across the country and scattered throughout the world have been tested in his honor, it is estimated that approximately 400 tests have been taken and sent to the Cleveland Clinic over this past month. Smith is on prayer lists across the country. Some have even set up shifts so that prayers on his behalf are offered 24/7. There are those who have offered supplies like refreshments, pens, and other amenities at the various drives that the family and Mike Taylor have arranged. The drives arranged by the family and/or Mike Smith now number 5. Others have arranged drives in other places- the number of tests taken at these is unknown. At least two more drives arranged by Mike Taylor and the family are in the making. Also, countless loving souls have sent Smith care packages, cards, games, and gifts of all sorts. Even a boy from the United Kingdom sent him a letter! All local media have volunteered their services, including WYMT TV. Not to be overlooked is the sort of grass roots support given in terms of those who have made flyers and posted them, etc.
This benefit sale given by Owens, Richards, and the Elkhorn City Girl Scout Troupe is the latest touching evidence of the community's care. The money raised today will also go to pay for the tests that will be taken in future.
Smith's family continue to send their overwhelming gratitude to all these ones. Tonight, deepest appreciations are expressed also to Lisa Owens and Heather Richards.
