When I was in elementary school in the Midwest back in the 1950's, we had a boy that attended our school who once a year cut his hair into a Mohawk. At first the school tried to fight his Mohawk, but because he was a Native American and it was part of their ritual, they had to allow his expression. Was he a distraction? Only to the administration who grit their teeth in concession, but the students didn't really care. Those who paid attention in class, still paid attention in class and those who goofed off, still goofed off. Perhaps some of those goof-offs might take advantage of the different individual, but if they didn't have that individual to pick on, they would find something else.
Our politically correct school systems are supposed to be encouraging individualism, well she is expressing her individualism, yet this girl suspended from school for pink hair is being given a different message. She is honoring her father with the awareness color for cancer, and might I say her pink hair is not bright hot pink, it is very subtle and not far off from what I have seen many red head colors. The school administrator that was interviewed on the local TV station said, "we need to go on with the process of education", and I could not agree more. Forget the pink hair and do what your supposed to do and educate the children. Pink hair will soon blow over and no one will pay it any attention, in this case it is the school administration that has brought it to the attention, not only of the school but to the whole nation.
Our school systems are hurting for funding, teachers are becoming overworked, kids are given ridalin to make them quite and attentive little soldiers, personally I think it is time to give the kids back their personality and individualism. Pink hair? What is that about? Go to Hollywood or just about any place else in the country. Through out the generations it is something new for each generation to express themselves. Boys with duck tails or long hair, girls in mini skirts, ear piercings then nose piercings now no part of the body is safe from piercings. Pink hair doesn't amount to a hill of beans except for a few fashion police who say, "Be an individual but do it within my guidelines". Hey if it isn't blatant lewdness or misbehavior, she isn't hurting anyone, she is telling dad, "I still remember you".
