Girls Costume Ideas for a 1950’s Party

1950's party themes are extremely popular. So don't be surprised to find an invitation requesting you come dressed in a sock hop or "Grease" theme to your next costume party. Fortunately, it is not difficult to pull together a 1950's costume as you can still find some of these items in modern clothing styles and then there are always vintage stores you can peruse.

Shirt or blouse for a 1950's ladies costume:

You can use a close fit or tight sweater with a boat neck or off the shoulder neckline. Another option is a button down blouse with a peter pan collar, and an angora sweater. If you can find a letter jacket, you will most closely fit the 1950's theme and it can be worn with either the pull-over sweater or blouse.

Pants or skirt for a 1950's ladies costume:

Classic Jeans cuffed at the ankle are appropriate for a 1950's ladies costume. Black close fitting pedal pusher (capri) pants with a slit at the bottom of the leg is very time period appropriate. Circle skirts are probably the most appropriate item for your 1950's costume, with or without a poodle on it. Make it full by wearing white crinolines under it. If you don't have crinolines, put a white, flowy, cotton skirt under it to mimic crinolines. By the way, circle skirts are incredibly easy to sew.

Shoes for your 1950's ladies costume:

There are a few different options for footwear for your 1950's costume. Flat, canvas, tennis shoes will be the easiest to find. If you are wearing black pedal pushers, consider a pair of slipper sandals with a heel. If you can, keep searching until you find a pair of black and white saddle shoes.

Accessories for your 1950's ladies costume:

If your hair is long, it should be worn in a ponytail that is curled at the end. For medium or short hair, it should be curled and styled to frame the face. Older women will want to try a Lucille Ball hairstyle. You can always purchase a red "Lucy" wig. Also, wear a scarf around your neck, knotted at the side. A scarf used as a ponytail holder is also a nice touch.
