Girls' Guide to the Hangover (2009)

Girls' Guide to the Movies

One Voice
I'm not sure what to tell you about this flick. It's clever, crude, shocking, offensive, and absolutely hilarious. I don't know if I can even articulate what I've just witnessed. If you want the dirt on what you're really looking for, keep reading. Sex, Romance, Drama? Do they tug at your heart strings? Who loses their shirts? Who do we get to see in the buff?

Sex
Full Frontal Nudity. That's right gals. Only, it's no one you'd ever want to see in the buff. Your eyes will burn after so many opportunities to see Alan (Zach Galifianakis) without his pants. You'll laugh through the tears when they present you with Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) though.

Aside from the men, there's one blatant chest shot of Jade (Heather Graham), as she's preparing to nurse her baby, but little else.

Romance
There is a touch of romance toward the end. Stu (Ed Helms) makes a connection with the rather sweet stripper Jade that he drunkenly married the night before. She's certainly a better choice for him than the controlling, disloyal, angry girlfriend he finally breaks up with after his adventures.

Friendship
There are some touchingly honest shows of friendship and kindness between the guys. It's awkward and tremulous, as real friendship often is. The bond this journey forges is one to last a lifetime.

Family
The beginning of the movie gives some sweet familial moments. Doug (Justin Bartha) is truly welcomed into his fiance's family. Her dad loans Doug his pride and joy, the car he loves more than his only son. Doug invites his probably harmless, definitely unstable, soon-to-be brother in-law to his bachelor party. It clearly means the world to Alan.

Humor
This film is certainly overly crude at many points. It has a great deal of wit and character to compensate. The audience roared with laughter through most of it. Above all, it is a very funny movie.

Strong Female Characters
Not so much. The only female that stands out as strong is so horribly unpleasant, she warrants an entirely different descriptive vocabulary.

Clothes
There are so many people in so many types of outfits, my head spins trying to sort them out. Phil (Bradley Cooper) is gorgeous in anything, but stands out in a nice suit or tux at times. For the most part, the clothing isn't noteworthy. Appropriate to the scene. Well fitted to the moment and character. Unimpressive and unimportant.

My final say on this flick? If you're engaged or recently married avoid it like the plague. It'll worry you sick about the bachelor party. If you have delicate sensibilities, well you'll probably think its funny anyway but you won't admit it. And, as if it needs to be said, under NO circumstances is this appropriate for children! If you made it through those criteria, though, go see this film. There aren't words to describe it, and that says more than words could.

  • Never use a stolen police car to steal Mike Tyson's pet tiger.
  • Never kidnap a naked asian mob boss.
  • Never buy drugs from a stranger at the liquor store.
According to Bradley Cooper: "the people in Las Vegas never even noticed a movie was being filmed." He said that he had tiger scratches on his neck, all bloodied, and Justin Bartha was beet red, and nobody noticed, or even stopped to double-take.
