Gisele Bundchen and Her Worldwide Breasfeeding Law

Tom Brady's Supermodel Wife Wants to See Women Breastfeed for at Least Six Months

Kim Keason
Gisele Bundchen, Brazilian supermodel, wife of Tom Brady, and mother to a seven month old son announced to Harper's Bazaar magazine that there should be a mandatory worldwide law that mothers should have to breastfeed their babies for at least six months. Gisele Bundchen laid out several reasons why she believes a breastfeeding law should be in effect, worldwide.

According to Harper's Bazaar, Gisele believes that she got back into her supermodel physique within minutes after giving birth to her son, Benjamin, because of breastfeeding. Gisele and Tom Brady welcomed their son into the world in December 2009.

Here is the quote form Ms. Bundchen regarding formula for babies: "Some people (in the US) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think, 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?'" the New York Daily News quoted Bundchen as telling Harper's Bazaar UK.

She added, "I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months." There are so many things wrong with that statement that I don't even know where to begin.

Who would regulate a Worldwide Breastfeeding Law?

Before we get a thousand volunteers I just would like to know how anyone would police this heinous crime. Would we have breast investigators, nipple detectives, or just the local police department? Now that would be a new benefits' perk.

What would the punishment be if you bottle feed your baby?

The Scarlet Letter comes to mind as a punishment for not breastfeeding your baby. The humiliation may just be enough to shame women into nursing. Subservience and shame are the best ways to do what's right for the children.

Can I put breast milk in a bottle and feed it to my baby?

This may be a sticky complication to the worldwide breastfeeding law. I think we would need an expert breast milk tester who will willingly take squirts from unsuspecting baby bottles. This adds a whole new meaning to the phrase "taking candy from a baby".

I think I've made my point without resorting to the facts or medical issues. I would like to point you to my article on mastitis while pregnant. This infection greatly reduced the amount of time I could breastfeed. There are many more reasons why a woman cannot or chooses not to nurse her child. The biggest thing is it is her choice.

Ms. Bundchen, your statements are an insult to free-thinking, child-loving, breast and bottle feeding mothers around the world.

♥ My friend's mom weaned the kids at 2 years of age or until they bit instead of nursed. (ouch)

Oh that would be an easy law to enforce. It could be a boob patrol lead by the top boob - Gisele

Too many mothers are unable to breastfeed, and feel bad enough about that already.

Interesting controversy to tap into. As much as I advocate breast feeding, making it mandatory is over the top. Jennifer's comment said it all!!

I wrote about the same topic. Her comment really angered me and it's a good example of why models should be seen and not heard.

Good grief. I think breastfeeding is wonderful, and I breastfed both of my kids for over a year, but I was very fortunate to be able to do so. I know several women who wanted to breastfeed, but just couldn't for whatever reason, and it doesn't mean they're not good mothers!

Who would enforce such a law? Why Big Brother who loves us all! It would be easily enforced simply by placing surveillance cameras throughout your house and motivating your neighbors to turn you in if they don't think you're doing it right! It can also help us to discover the traitors among us who do not truly love Big Brother. It's a win, win proposition! Right now we've uncovered an article writer spewing out hate against our beloved leader, talk about a "hate crime", this article is it! I ought to write a novel about it but Orwelle already has!

I personally think breast feeding is the best thing for both baby and mom. But it scares me when somebody wants to REQUIRE or LEGISLATE others to do it. Whatever happened to one's right to choose? I'm agreeing with Charlotte (below).
