The announced Chairman of the Giuliani Justice Advisory Committee is Former Solicitor General Ted Olson. Upon announcement of the formation of the committee, Olson remarked, "Rudy Giuliani believes in limited government, individual liberty and interpreting the Constitution the way its framers intended. He understands that we need judges who interpret the Constitution, not legislate from the bench. Rudy Giuliani will appoint strict constructionist judges who share that philosophy." Having already established himself as a strict constructionist, Giuliani appointed additional committee members who espouse the same beliefs and theories on legal issues.
The eighteen Justice Advisory Committee members are: Miguel Estrada, a former Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States; Steven Calabresi, a Co-Founder of the Federalist Society; Carol Dinkins and Larry Thompson, both former Deputy Attorneys General of the United States; Charles Fried, a former Solicitor General of the United States; Maureen Mahoney, a former Deputy Solicitor General of the United States; Doug Cox, a former Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the United States; former Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Mukasey; his father, Michael Mukasey, a former Chief Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York; Dan Webb, a former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Ron Cass and Daniel Rodriguez, former Deans for the Boston University School of Law and the University of San Diego School of Law respectively; Bart Schwartz, a former Chief of the Criminal Division for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, where Giuliani himself worked as a U.S. Attorney; Jason Barclay, former Counsel and Policy Director to Republican Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana; Randy Mastro, who served as Deputy Mayor of New York City when Giuliani himself was Mayor; Howard Wilson, who served as Commissioner of Investigation for New York City when Giuliani was Mayor; George Priest, a Professor of Law and Economics at Yale University; and Walter Olson, a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Notably absent from the list is anyone representing Giuliani's own alma mater, the New York University School of Law.
In the press release, committee appointee Calabresi shared some of the Giuliani campaign philosophy: "Unelected judges legislating from the bench threaten the Federalist philosophy that is the foundation of our Constitutional system. Judges are meant to judge - not make laws. Under Rudy Giuliani, it will stay that way."
