Who doesn't love free software? And there are enough freeware and shareware sites all over the Internet to keep me occupied for hours at a time.
However, as great as free software can be, there are some limitations.
Freeware and Shareware Explained
There are basically two kinds of free software that you'll find online.
Shareware is software that's "free to try." Often, there's a limitation on the program so that it will only work for a certain amount of time, usually for thirty days. (Although I've used shareware that only worked for a week.) Or there might be a limitation on the amount of uses you can get out of a shareware program. For example, after you've used the shareware for the fifth time, it will stop working.
The theory is that, once you've tried the program for free, you'll be more likely to want to buy it and use it without limitation.
Freeware, on the other hand, doesn't have the same kind of limitations as shareware. In fact, a lot of freeware is just that, a free program someone worked hard to put together and wanted to share at no charge.
However, some freeware is just the "lite" version of a similar program that has more features. While the freeware version has useful features, there's usually a Pro or Gold version that can do more, but that you'll have to pay to use. The theory with this kind of freeware is that you'll like the free version and all of its features so much you won't mind paying for all of the other features available.
Another limitation with some freeware programs is that you can't use them to create commercial products. For example, with certain freeware screensaver makers, you can make as many screensavers as you want, and give them away to your heart's content. But you can't sell them. If you want to use the program to create commercial products, you have to pay.
A lot of shareware and freeware programs are great, even with the limitations. But you can get free, fully functioning software, with all the features and no restrictions, at Give Away of the Day.
What Is Give Away of the Day?
Give Away of the Day is a web site that gives away one free, fully functional, full-featured commercial program every day. These are programs you'd usually have to pay for. But, for one day, you can get them absolutely free at Give Away of the Day.
I've seen programs at Give Away of the Day that would usually cost you a hundred dollars or more, and you can get them at this site for no cost. But there is only a twenty four hour window of opportunity. Once you miss a giveaway, it's gone. In fact, if you don't want to weep, ignore the list of past giveaways that you've already missed.
Give Away of the Day is a site I make sure I visit every day. And you should to.
