Give Jack a Ring

Jay-Jamar
Since the memory of most, Jack Nicholson has been that faithful old companion to the Los Angeles Lakers. At every home game and many of the away games, particularly during playoffs, Jack has shown up. He'd probably show up to practice if he could. I wouldn't be surprised if it had already happened. This isn't just some typical celebrity showing their faces on court-side, just to be admired. Jack is a true fan. He gets involved.

Often arguing with officials on the behalf of a Laker player, he might scream or shout, making sure that his presence is felt. You can find him in his season ticket seats, faithfully. Now of course there have been a few games here and there that he might not of made it to, but when you calculate the attendance rate over the course of several years, you'll see that it's truly impeccable. Sure you've had others whom were in Jack's world of fandom, but they quickly disintegrated along with their careers. I mean, there were some good runs of course.

Dating back, you had people like Doris Day, whom actually set the trend for attending these games, decades ago in the late 50's to early 60's. Then later on there came others like Arsenio Hall and Leonardo Dicaprio. However, Jack has proven that he is the ultimate fan, through his dedication and true concern for the team. No one has stayed true and dedicated like this guy, without letting his career interfere. It has even been rumored that producers have to work around the Lakers schedule when filming with Jack.

Jack has had many memorable Staple Center moments. He's celebrated a birthday at the pleasure of the Laker girls, has been caught many a times getting very animated during "bad" calls on the floor(remember that magic game), and even had his moment on the kiss-me cam with Adam Sandler. He's also been acknowledged by basketball greats like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In a nut-shell, Jack has grown with, and become embedded into the very fabric and culture of the Lakers, the Staple Center and Los Angeles.

Would it be possible for someone of his stature to be grandfathered into receiving a Championship ring? I wondered this for a while but always thought that it was far fetched, until Reggie Miller mentioned it during the Laker game where they received their championship rings. Now, could and would the same be said for other dedicated fans like Spike Lee with the N.Y. Knicks? Well, I guess the Knicks would have to win a Championship first before we could even pose that question. So one dedicated fan at a time. Or how about dedicated fans that have no other previous fame? Would they qualify? I'm sure that if they didn't, they would still vote Jack in. He's just proved himself over the years. Sure he's famous and has court side seats(which play a big role in his recognition), but like I said, he's simply all about the game. With this extensive and well put together resume, why not, give Jack a ring.

They're other Die-Hard fans out there of other teams, like Spike Lee for the N.Y. Knicks, but they haven't won a Championship in ages.

Lakers games are events. But, the crowd seems pretty subdued, unless they are cheering for a really big game...
