Give it What You Have (And Leave the Rest Behind)

Erik Frenz
You look up at me, your eyebrows curl passionately, making my life,
And I know that the next step is staking my life.

Your bright eyes and fiery hair glow in the dark,
The world is upside down when I'm faking my life.

I catch my breath to soothe my lungs; give me some time.
Your kiss sucks the wind from me while I'm mistaking my life.

I look in through the shattered glass, and watch you,
Bouncing, sweating, flexing, and breaking my life.

You looked like a natural, performing for the camera,
So you must have had experience before forsaking my life.

I load my boxes, forgetting the man I once was,
Who sweat out through my pores when you were waking my life.

The knife penetrates the skin, the red drips down, but I'm numb now,
So I guess that's the first step in remaking my life.

As blackness unfolds, I look for light,
To heal the one thing that's aching: my life.

So tell me what's easier, friend, breaking my life,
Or watching me bleed when you're taking my life?

Ooo dang dude. Sounds like a little bit of hurt in this one. Before I say anything else, I have to say I really like how every other line ended with life--caters to the visual aspect of poetry--very nice. The only things with any real meaning I gotta say about this one are these three things: 1) PAIN IS WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY; 2) WHATEVER DOESN'T KILL YOU WILL ONLY MAKE YOU STRONGER; and 3) IT'LL WORK OUT. Taking these three things into account combined with this poem, a different approach would be taken instead of the self-destruction that the pain induced by the significant other brought forth. Mainly "IT'LL WORK OUT" should be taken into account as a first thought, then the other two are reassurances when you most feel like you're at your weakest. Whether this is a personal poem or not, it has a very personal ring to many people's lives...and I love it!! Nice stuff.
