Give Your Sweetheart a Poetic Bouquet for Valentine's Day

A Rose by Any Other Name is Still a Romantic Gift

Deb Martin-Webster
Our first Valentine's Day as a married couple my husband bought me a beautiful bouquet of roses. He presented the long white box adorned with a satin red bowed concealing a dozen perfectly formed long-stemmed American Beauties. It was then I remembered I'd neglected to tell him . . . I'm highly allergic to roses! Watery-eyed and sneezing I used more than a half box of tissues thanking him for his precious gift. He felt so badly he apologized, put them on the back porch and headed back to the florist. An hour later he returned with a stunning bouquet of wild flowers.

Nevertheless, I love roses. They come in such exquisite colors and express the classic romantic gift from the heart. Being the clever Englishman that he is the following year he presented me with a unique gift; a handcrafted book of poetry and poems about Roses.

Here is a sample selection of Rose Poems and Poetry you might like to give your rose sensitive sweetheart on Valentine's Day.

The Last Rose by John Davidson
'O WHICH is the last rose?'
A blossom of no name.
At midnight the snow came;
At daybreak a vast rose,
In darkness unfurl'd,
O'er-petall'd the world.

The Rose did caper on her cheek by Emily Dickinson
The Rose did caper on her cheek --
Her Bodice rose and fell --
Her pretty speech -- like drunken men --
Did stagger pitiful -

Tis the Last Rose of Summer by Thomas Moore
Tis the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone:
No flower of her kindred,
No rose-bud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh.

A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.

O Gather Me the Rose by William Ernest Henley
O gather me the rose, the rose,
While yet in flower we find it,
For summer smiles, but summer goes,
And winter waits behind it.

    This was nice of your husband, but I'm sorry that you are not able to enjoy real roses! My wife, Mary, loves to grow and smell roses. I like to photograph them. Here is a sample of my many slideshows with roses: http://www.associatedcontent.com/slideshow/57316/the_international_rose_test_garden.html?cat=32&com=1#comments
