Giving Back During the Holiday Season

Amanda Lay
The year just seems to fly by, doesn't it? It is hard to believe that the holiday season is almost here. To me, the true spirit of giving that the holiday season once stood for is not so obvious today. Sadly, the spirit of giving that once dominated the holiday season has now been replaced by a hurried frenzy of materialism and spending large amounts of money trying to impress our friends, family and loved ones. How can we return to celebrating the true meaning and importance of the holiday season?

The effort to recapture the true holiday spirit is not over. All is not lost. There is still a lot of reason to have hope. The effort to recapture the true meaning and importance of the holiday spirit begins with each of us. It is important to take the time during the holiday season to give of ourselves to those people who are in need. Giving to those who are in need does not just mean giving money to a charity, worthy cause, or religious organization.

Each of us has been blessed with the gifts of time, talent and energy. What better time is there than the holiday season to share those blessings by serving others? There are many opportunities in your community to help others this holiday season. Find an opportunity that matches your interests. Do you love animals? You would probably enjoy volunteering at the local Humane Society. Do you like to work with tools? You might want to think about serving as a Christmas in April volunteer. Christmas in April is a nonprofit organization that builds new homes for homeless families who are in need of housing. If you enjoy visiting with Senior Citizens, volunteering at a Retirement Community may just be the perfect fit for you.

Giving back just a small portion of our many blessings is so important. Giving to others who are in need helps us to gain a new appreciation for the gifts we have been given. Oftentimes, giving to those in need gives us a much more important valuable purpose in our lives. As humans, we can be selfish. It is a terrific learning and growth experience for us to spend our time and energy this holiday season serving someone who is in need. It will help us all to recapture the true meaning and importance of the holiday season. We will remember the true reason why the holiday season is such a special time of the year.
